I think it's a great idea but it sure wouldn't go in my little town here. The idiots of this fine town actually voted to have red light cameras shut down even though there was proof of how they lowered the number of red light runners. But...one woman (who coincidentally is the head of the local Tea Bagger Party) campaigned against the cameras and got it on the ballot and the sheeple jumped on that bandwagon like flies on sugar. When the "amendment" passed they showed a photo of this woman celebrating the victory with her friends at their local tavern hoisting mugs of beer. They (the people who monitor the cameras) have shown that since they were shut down red light running at those particular intersections has tripled. No one is going to be happy until someone gets killed and then I'm sure they'll find someone else to blame. As for our busy body Tea Bagger - she better hope she never runs into me at a City Council meeting.

Multiple studies have shown that red light cameras increase the number of accidents in an intersection. They are nothing more than a blatant money grab from the government.

I think it's a great idea. Hopefully with technological improvements, it could be smaller and less cumbersome to the officers. Those poor police strap so much stuff to their bodies with the duty belt/radio and such, it creates like 40-50 lbs of extra weight.

That's not the camera's fault. It's the fault of the people who would normally run a red light who realize they might get caught.

True, but those people don't cause accidents when they run that just-turned-red light and nobody gets hurt, but when people slam their brakes on yellow lights to avoid possibly getting a camera ticket rear end accidents occur more often, which does lead to possible injury. So the cameras have absolutely nothing to do with public safety, and in fact put the public in more danger, for nothing more but a stream of revenue for the government. The government is putting revenue ahead of the public's safety and I applaud anyone who works to get them shut down, even if they are Tea Party members.

As someone who's been hit by a car while walking across the street on a "just-turned-red light" because someone was trying to speed through I can disagree.

I would have rather them rear-ended my car instead of hitting me. And guess what? It was the exact same town Terry B is talking about. If people did what they were supposed to and slowed when they saw yellow they wouldn't have to worry about it. Or if they were careful on a "stale" green.

    I've never run a red.

    I've never rear-ended someone.

    I've never hit someone.

    And I drive fast.

It's really not that hard to just pay attention and do the right thing.

no, Out Of Order...the camera does not go off when they enter a donut shop......

    but.........it does go into automatic wide-shot !

anything that helps the good guys is fine by me...seems a good idea...

'specially since so many are so seemingly adept at using the system to get away with being bad....

Obviously you have an understandably emotional reaction to red light cameras, but the numbers don't lie. Red light cameras make intersections more dangerous. It's a factual statistic. You really can't argue against it.

Let me expand on what I mean, since I wrote that post late last night right before bed and left out a lot of what I meant to say.

A red light camera would've most likely not stopped you from getting hit. Nobody looks around, sees that there's no cops, and then decides to blow through a red light and just hope that they don't T-bone somebody in the cross traffic. Red lights that are run and cause an accident are run by people who are distracted while driving and just don't notice that they have a red light. You say you got hit by someone who ran a just turned red light, so that makes me wonder what you were doing in the intersection if that persons light had just turned red, since when a light turns red, the lights in all directions are red for a couple of seconds to ensure nobody gets hit if someone decides to gun it on a yellow and ends up going through the intersection while the light turns red. At least that's how it works where I live. It would seem to be very dangerous to have the cross traffic light turn green the instant the light going the other direction turns red. But as I've already established, red light cameras have nothing to do with safety and everything to do with generating revenue. Local police chiefs and politicians in my area have admitted to this, and red light cameras have been banned in my area.

I'm not trying to claim that you were at fault for getting hit, I'm just pointing out that a camera wouldn't have prevented a distracted driver from running the red light. But not having cameras can help prevent rear end collisions, which can and do leads to whiplash, neck and head injuries.
