If you like fantasy it might be worth trying the Eragon series. It's classed as a kids book series but its actually quite complex. And it has dragons in it so you know its cool.

For sci-fi theres only a couple of books I've really read that I loved and they were The Forever War and Forever Peace by Joe Haldeman. They both make up one story collectively, and although the first seems quite typical for any sci-fi story, the second half takes the story in a completely different direction and takes you be surprise, which is why I enjoyed it so much.

When you google "best books ever written", it appears the Harry Potter books are rated higher then classics like "Pride and Prejudice" and "War and Peace"...

"The Stand" is considered the 76th best book ever written.
