    Have you read 2001, 2010, 2064 and 3001 by Arthur C. Clark? They're really good sci-fi and the first book is a lot more digestible than the film.

    Also Philip K Dick, who wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (which was later made into the movie Blade Runner) and other novels. Dick was a very interesting character.

    If you mean Pirate Latitudes, I would recommend reading it. It's a very fast paced book, and a quick read.

    I would highly recommend Mark Helprin. Pure storytelling combined with gorgeous prose.
