I was at a function many many moons ago held for Irish-Americans (I have dual citizenship). Little did I know the function also had an underlying motive of recruitment for the IRA, back when they engaged in terrorism. Their recruitment tactics were rather good I must admit... making their political case, working two on one, and utilized some brainwashing techniques (I know as I took training back in the 70’s to undue people brainwashed by groups like the hare krishna’s). I had a few too many drinks (it was an Irish event after all

) and it got a bit ugly as I told the IRA duo that were working me, rather boisterously and loudly, that I detested their tactics of targeting innocent people and considered them cowards. That I could see winning the hearts and minds of the people to create political change, but their tactics of terror were simply barbaric etc etc. My uncle quickly ushered me out of the function telling me you just don’t screw with these people.

I guess what I’m saying here is that brainwashing is very real and can have devastating consequences.

i know what you mean about the ira...me granpappy was one o' the originals, waaaayyy back in the day...one of the ones told, at the turn o' the last century (talkin' early 1900's) , to get out or else by the brits...

and he would , in private, talk openly about not liking the tactics of the newer gen...but never in public
