I always liked Full Dark, No Stars and just about any of Mr. Kings short works.

It is an absolute must read. It was my 1st sk book, and it blew me away. If you're still looking for something shorter and a bit different, try the langoliers from 4 past midnight, or the girl who loved tom Gordon. I've not read misery but I think that could fit your sequence. But definately keep "it" within reach and try it again after a few more books.
Think I would go with Salems Lot, Cujo or Needfull Things. Go back to It at a later date. 'It' is a fantastic read so don't force it, wait a while...
You HAVE to persevere IT! By far one of the best pieces of modern literature. It's an intimidating book, but once you get 200-300 pages deep, you're in for a real treat. I finished my first read through months ago and I still find myself thinking about the characters in the book.
