Default Double Feature - Owen King

I'm only on page 12, but you guys. You guys. This is really top-notch stuff. I had to stop reading to come tell you that.

It's snappy, smart, and lively. Characterizations extremely strong and well-drawn. Of course, it might let me down later, but what a smashing beginning. I haven't been this excited about a non-SK novel in a while.

If you liked the first few pages that much, you'll love the rest, too; I certainly did.

I want to quote some of the best parts at you, but I feel like that would deprive you of the joy of finding them yourselves.

Can't find it here. We don't have a real bookstore any longer. The guy who owns the local "bookstore" deals mainly in used books, and only orders new ones upon request, and for an extra fee.....but he does teach knitting at the store, so that's something......right? I also checked at the local Walmart, and they don't have it, either.

Aw, Sundrop. I'm reading mine on my Kindle--didn't want to wait for it to be shipped or try to find it. You could get it from Amazon (either Kindle or hardback) if you're not morally opposed to Amazon. (Or even if you are morally opposed to Amazon. I won't tell.)

Okay okay okay. One tiny quote. This is in the excerpt you can find online, so ... it's not horrible that I'm sharing it. But I'll put it in spoiler tags anyway.

    The setup:

The main character, Sam, is thinking about his father, Booth, a used-to-be B movie actor whose bombast and theatricality annoy the piss out of him (Sam). Specifically this is his reaction to the story that Booth always tells about the day Sam was born.

    The quote:

The story was undoubtedly an exaggeration if not an outright fabrication. Booth had been in the business of cheap entertainment so long that he had gone native.

    How this makes me feel:

Envious that I didn't write it myself.
