I was wondering if anyone knew of any particular vender that sells (or gives away...) sets of Stephen King novels.
I am a high school English teacher and I, specifically, teach American Literature. I believe that King's work is a crucial and very important part of American culture and his work should be discussed in the classroom. Out of all the novels I have read by King, I believe that The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon could serve as an excellent novel in the classroom. The female protagonist, paired with the horror, adventure, and baseball, I believe, creates a very appealing novel to both male and female students.
It is also my hope that reading a Stephen King novel would spike my students' interest in reading. I have recently realized that my reading of 'Salem's Lot was my watershed moment when it came to my interest in reading. I hadn't always been a reader, but I devoured King's novels (and I still do). If I hadn't picked up 'Salem's Lot at 13, I may not have ever had my watershed moment, I may not be an English teacher today. My entire life could be different and, because of that, I am eternally grateful for King's work. Due to this, I would love to teach a King novel and hopefully create a love for story and character within my students.
I am already requesting two class sets this year (Catcher in the Rye and A Streetcar Named Desire) and as I work in a relatively impoverished area, there is no way that my district will be able to scrounge up enough money to buy me another class set. I will have to purchase this on my own, which is why I was hoping someone knew of a vender (besides Amazon.com) that sold cheap, or gave away, class sets of King's novels.
If anyone can help me out here, I would greatly appreciate it. I would love to use this novel to close out the year with my English III students.
Hi and welcome to the SKMB. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon sounds like a perfect pick for your class. I know I enjoyed it. Hope you find the sponsor needed!!!Thank you for introducing your class to reading SK books.
This could be really interesting. May I be your online student while you teach it? I'll do all the homework and write essays. I've never been formally taught a King book and I'd love to have an experience like this. PM me with a syllabus because I'm serious. :-)
