It looks like the judge's hands are tied by the UCMJ as far as the guilty pleas go, and nobody seems interested in allowing him to plead guilty to lesser charges, which suggests that they have enough evidence to convict him (which, I'm sure they do.)

Not allowing him to plead guilty to the 32 existing lesser charges can only benefit the accused, as those guilty pleas could be used against him for the other 13 counts that do carry the death penalty.

It looks to me like the military is playing this one straight, even giving the accused several benefits, so that there will be no hint of injustice if he is sentenced to death, which he almost certainly will be.
