I have a sort of reverse writer's block (for lack of a better term) . I have no trouble coming up with ideas; rather, I seem to have too many at once and I can't sort through them so that I can hone in on just one. I haven't written more than a paragraph in almost a month because of this, when I know I should be writing every day! Can someone help??
I use a small notebook. Great for stuff that pops up on the fly; character traits, ideas. Just focus on the idea you have at the moment (or pick an idea to start with) and jot down the other things as they come up, even when you're still on that first idea. Yes, keep the notebook beside you as you write, but only open it to throw an idea in there, THEN SHUT IT!! Helps me BIG TIME. It puts the things that jump in my head right to bed; I feel I don't need to dwell on whatever just jumped in there because it's now written down and won't be forgotten. It tricks the brain, seems to settle the thinking down to the task at hand. You never know... something you jot down in there could fit in later in your writing and possibly enhance your already kick-ass idea (or whatever it is you're writing). This works for me, but it's only a suggestion. Go with what you feel comfortable with.
No worries! On one hand I'm grateful for the abundance of ideas. I shouldn't run out of good stories til about the year 2050! But on the other hand there are so many that I can't pull them apart and weave them properly. And as for files and notes, I have so many that it's blasphemy to On Writing. SK would scold me! I just don't know what to do with them all!
yeh i know how you feel fella, I have ideas all the time. I tend to just write the stuff in my head down to get the story started, then let it go for a while, six months or so. I have started so many bits of stuff all over the writers groups on here Im afraid to go back to them.
check out Chris's site APT WRITERS for good ideas on what to do from other folks just like you.
my notepads just run into one big MEGA MESS of garbled ideas- wanna swap!
