Enjoy reading The Shining.Great book.
a must read...one of the very best...sit back and enjoy a master at work weaving a magic carpet dark and scary
I honestly don't get the hate on the movie, Jack's acting alone is enough to make it brilliant (OK, so Shelly's acting takes it back down a bit). Sure it was quite different to the book, but aren't all films? 2 examples of King books that were very closely followed for the films are Green Mile - excellent film, and the Langoliers - the acting is somewhat terrible, but the film, because it is so close to the novella (which is one of my favourites) was still decent. The only problem is, they are both 3 hours long. If the Shining was closely followed it would be too long to be a successful movie. (I know there was a mini series, but that was crap in my humble opinion)
As for it being worth a read? It is alot more in depth than the film. I personally found it too slow, and I don't see it as one of his best - mine is a minority view though - but I still liked it, and think yes, it is worth a read.
Now thats an example of how different we all are and how we percieve his work. And that is why this board is so great.
I loooved the book and was young enough to be excited to see it open in the movies. With Jack N!! I was so dissapointed.
And I actually liked the mini series. It at least was true to the novel, cheesy as it was at points.
The book? A must read for any sk fan.
I saw a paperback copy this past weekend in a used bookstore that I had not come across before. It was a foily metallic silver on the front, back, and spine. Looked neat.
That's the movie tie-in version, the only version of the book I have actually. I have been holding off replacing it with a hardback until a more deluxe version is released.
Read it, read it, READ IT!!!!!
The Shining was my first Stephen King read and it is one of my favorites. It's also one that scared me the most! It is wonderfully written, and unlike the movie (which in my opinion, sucked the big one) gives you a deep understanding of the characters and shows Jack Torrence's slow descent into maddness as opposed to Jack Nicholson's "look at me I'm a crazy *$%#er" in the first scene of the movie. (don't get me wrong, I LOVE Jack...this just was not his best performance). Enjoy the story - it's a great one!
