What about the other caretakers?

If memory serves me right, the only other caretaker mentioned in the book is the one that killed his family. Did it ever mention how long ago that had been? What about all the other caretakers through the years? Wouldn't strange things have happened to them as well? Was it mentioned in the book that they could never get the same people to come back after their first season of watching the house? I guess it could be explained that the house only seriously messed with people that had the shine, but I still think some of the other caretakers would have had something spooky happen that could have been added to the story. What do you guys think?
