Neil Gaiman. I think I would recommend "Neverwhere" as a starting point. If you like a little darker, then "American Gods". Or if you want satire "Good Omens", which is co-written by Terry Pratchett. I also can't say more good things about his YA book "The Graveyard Book."

For light-hearted comedies try John Steinbeck's books. NOT! There's just too many good authors out there to list all of them- Koontz (as long as they don't have golden retrievers with supernatural powers), Joe Lansdale, Robert McCammon, Dan Simmons, Joe Hill, Tabitha King, Scott Smith, the list goes on and on........
