In my opinion, the lottery was the worst of a lot of bad ideas. Particularly after a lot of people wasted hours trying to buy the signed edition when S&S had technical issues. It simply allowed some to game the system (one guy on another forum said he won six times!). There is no perfect way to do this. Some people are not going to get one. But I would go with a first-come-first serve method. There has to be a fair and technically sound way to do that without crashing the system. At the very least, the most dedicated fans will have a better chance in that process instead of opening this up to the entire world for weeks and leaving it to chance.
Regarding book signings, I really liked the way it worked in Savannah. Buy the new book, get a number, leave, come back and get either the new book signed or an older book when the event starts. That's win-win for everyone. SK sells a copy of his new book and the reader gets a choice as to which book to get signed. It's all orderly according to your number and you don't have to stand in line all day.
