Starting this one tonight.
About forty pages into it, not much time for reading this week unfortunately. Good flow so far though.
Into the hundreds now, so far so good. Peter The Dog is my kind of dog.
About halfway done. Knew I spoke too soon about Peter.
This book is simply stunning, in my opinion. His finest assemblage of every-man humor, sci-fi horror, and insight into the human mind. I read everything from Hemmingway to The Profits, and King completely blows me away. Poor Peter...I have 50 pages to go (how did I miss this one?), and I hope David is OK. I am guessing he comes back from Altair-4 near the end...hope so...King is a genious, and the depths to which you can DIG him is limitless, if you can go there. Oh, and his daring use of Grammer...It takes great confidence (ok, audacious self-belief) to craft like he does. Great works do not make the man self-absorbed and conceited-the opposite is true (see Sting).
It's taking a while to get through this book - hardly any energy at the end of the day to put two or three pages at a time behind me.
But I had a chuckle last night while reading... I've often wondered which book had the well-known saying, Take a Flying *** at a Rolling Doughnut", and there it was!! I assume Stephen has only used the phrase this one time?
The Tommyknockers was one of the SK books that came out during a period when I had "had my fill" of SK, so I knew about it, had read the reviews, but did not read it at the time it was published. I guess it was a few years later that I found it on a remainder table in a bookstore, bought it and consumed it within a few days. I really like The Tommyknockers a lot.
But not the movie so much.
i'm one of those who put this at the end of the long list of king books: of course, having been a CR since '77...i've read 'em all, and something has to be towards the bottom, right ??
however...i just could not get into this one...nothing about it grabbed my attention, like with virtually every other book/story...
i felt most of it was kind of repetative...in a similar way that 'needful things was, but, somehow, i liked that one quite abit more...
but more importantly...what happened was...for only the first time (at that time) i was bored by nearly everything with this one...just did not get even slightly attached to any of the characters..any of the situations in it at all...just simply could not connect
..and it's not like i don't have a great love for sci-fi/horror...quite the contrary...
howver...as i've said before, with 'insomnia' (the only other one, save DT5/6/7, which i actively don't at least like)...reading all these posts/thoughts gives me hope that...someday, when i have time(and after i've re-read a few of the really good ones...again), i'll put this one on my re-read list and hope i come out the better for it...
until then...glad you all enjoyed it
