The Tommyknockers is a little uneven, but really good overall. I'd say Insomnia is the better of the two, though.

Insomnia is the better read...it goes a lot faster and is action-packed. But, if I were you, I would start with the Tommyknockers and then read Insomnia. It would give you a goal for getting through some rought spots in the Tommyknockers, that is if you have those rought spots.

I've never read the tommyknockers (and i really want to) but I say you read insomnia. This book has an interesting plot after the slow start and i found it to have an emotional ending that made me feel like it was all worth it.

Imho, though it's not your fault they were simultaneously awarded you, I understand The Tommyknockers vs Insomnia an unfortunate dilemma (plus, an inappropriate comparison).

We respond personally when faced with unfair demands. I love them both equally. I read Insomnia before The Tommyknockers, and since it was for me as fantastic as it was, and due to the pressure of demand, I say read Insomnia first.

Unless you like hardcore SciFi more than what, ever, Insomnia is.

I really don't know what you should do. Sorry.

Insomnia is excellent and I tend to agree with what CCal said, Tommyknockers first then delve into Insomnia.

I know this is an old topic, but I felt compelled to weigh in on the subject.

It might sound weird to say, but I'm very glad to hear all the positive sentiment on "Insomnia" -- mostly because I did not like the novel. Sometimes when I don't enjoy something from a favorite author, I hope that it possesses value for other fans. Believe it or not, I'm happy many people got something out of it even though I didn't get too much.

Now, on the subject of "The Tommyknockers" -- I do confess to lacking the ability to comprehend why so many people seem to actively dislike this piece. I thought it was a very fun book, although I have to say that I read it at a proper age: i.e., I was young enough to not know that not everything in it was wholly original (please note I'm not saying that Mr. King copied anything; I only mean that some of the themes and circumstances had already been expressed in other works; believe me, in my own writings, I oftentimes find it difficult not to tread over old literary ground).

"The Tommyknockers" will always be a memorable book for me. It had a lot of suspense, a lot of fascinating ideas, and a lot of interesting wordplay. My vote would have been to read "The Tommyknockers."
