And indeed, that has proved to be the case. We know far more about the ancient Sumerians (and the Epic of Gilgamesh, for example) which were inscribed on clay tablets, still readable today ('hard' copy?), than we do of much more recent cultures who transcribed on to papyrus or paper, long since rotted away.
