Sam Eliot as Eldred Jonas is perfect. Viggo would have to work on his voice.

Best choice for Susannah Dean in my opinion:
Naomi Harris from 28 Days Later, the Pirates movies, and Miami Vice. She has the looks, acting chops, and what seems to be the physical prowess to pull off the role.
*For Eddie you need someone that could pull off young twenties...and I don't think Jake Gyllenhaal is that guy lol. I keep thinking of Norman Reedus:

the enormity of even attempting to bring the dt to a screen (big or small) would be a daunting, moneygobbling endeavor: i'm hopping that they hire mostly unknowns...
all these 'stars', big and little, will cost way too much...: there be fanciful things, sceneries unseen in any other type of movie...
they need to take a que from good old george lucas, back in the days before anyone knew anything about long ago galaxies, and hire undiscoverd, but, nonetheless good, talent and sign 'em up for the long haul
if they start this thing, they need to finish it: i can't really see any of these relatively big-named stars sticking around for 5, 10 years (or more !) for a realistic salary..while most of the sets don't need to be anything special..
some of them do...
and there-in lies the quagmire of a humongous budget-busting beast
Here's the actors of the characters I've visualized:
ROLAND:
Viggo, not bad...I see Clint Eastwood (he's obviously too old now)
but has anyone considered Hugh Jackman (since he looks like eastwood)
EDDIE:
No trendy young actors will do...I really can't visualize anyone other than
Cillian Murphy (batman begins - dr crane)
SUSANNAH:
Rosario Dawson isn't a good enough actor to pull it off!
IMO...Naomi Harris, nice call *rvialet* (Tia Dalma - Pirates of the Caribbean)
JAKE:
wouldn't really make or break the cast...as long as the kid can act
ELDRED JONAS:
Sam Elliot of course!
TICK TOCK MAN:
Mickey Rourke
CORAL THORIN:
Rosanna Arquette
PERE CALLAHAN:
Clint Eastwood
SUSAN DELGADO:
Scarlett Johansson - bleach blond
Though she's too old (for the Susan character?)
SHERIFF AVERY:
John Goodman...?
anyone else have characters that stand out?
Benicio Del Toro as Roland = Perfect
There are some great suggestions here. IMO, I doubt that a film version is ever going to be made. The story is just too big and the only way it would be feasible, time-wise or money-wise, would be to cut a great deal - something I don't think any of us wants to see happen. However, it's always fun to speculate on who would be cast if it ever happens.
Personally, I have to agree with guido. I think too many big names is going to make the budget skyrocket in no time flat considering the length and depth of the story. Additionally, I've always felt that if there are more than say 4-5 big names in the same movie it just kinda takes something away from it. I'd like to see mostly unknown actors filling most of the parts.
That said, I think Hugh Jackman would be a great Roland, and Norman Reedus would make an interesting Eddie.
If The Dark Tower is to ever be done on screen I think %100 CGI would be the only way to go. There is way too much negative potential in the realm of casting to do this with live actors. If DT is ever done in cinema it better be done %100 right or not done at all!
Okay, so I haven't been a big supporter of making a Dark Tower movie (I already have visions of the characters in my head and don't want that messed up!), however, Mousey has come up with some good possibilities...and Sam Elliot is definitely Eldred Jonas!
I absolutely agree with about the Clint Eastwood and Hugh Jackman comparison and since Roland was supposed to be the Sergio Leone spaghetti western version of Clint Eastwood i think Sai Jackman would be perfect for the part, i just wished he had the cool, calm, collective, but deathly attitude that Sai Mortensen is able to capture.
