New York, New York (1977) directed by Martin Scorsese

I love Martin Scorsese movies but I have avoided this one all these years because I don't like musicals and this movie did poorly when it was released and it doesn't seem to have much of a following. I think this may be the only major Scorsese movie I had not seen. I decided to bite the bullet and watch this and I'm glad I did, it was fantastic. Be warned though, it's a downbeat movie and the Robert DeNiro character is about as unlikable as any character he has ever played that doesn't kill people. Scorsese wanted to give the film a 40's musical look so there is a lot of painted backgrounds that look fake but very cool (and they look fake on purpose). I have to say that Liza's kind of music is not my style but she was amazing and her New York New York final scene will blow you away. I should have known better than to doubt Martin Scorsese.

By the way, I was curious about the song, "New York, New York" and if it was written for the movie or not since the Sinatra version is the one I've always heard. I did a little research and found out that the song was written specifically for this movie so Liza's version is the real thing.

    The Mikado (1939).
A Gilbert & Sullivan play done as a movie. Surprisingly funny at times but the audio during the songs was a bit shrill and hard to understand.

The Possession. You can watch the movie once, but I do not think that I will ever watch it again. It is neither good nor bad, but it is rather slow, and not scary at all.

The Apparition. Same here I expected it to be much better, and I was a bit disappointed. Still, I think it is okay to watch the movie once.

Brian's Song on netflix. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. This movie touched me the first time I saw it as a kid, and it did again last night. I guess because it deals with friendship and football. It also may have been the first time, as a child, I understood death could take the strong as well as the weak, at anytime, for any reason. It also dealt a little with racism. Which as a white child growing up in the 70's in a small mountain town in the south didn't seem to exist. I'm sure their were some versions of it in play, but nothing obvious as would be spotted by a child. My parents had black friends, I went to school with and had black friends, played sports with black teammates, etc.. Thinking back, dating would have still have been considered taboo at the time in that small community, by both blacks (at least as represented by the thoughts of my childhood black friends) and whites. Good movie.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) James Bond flick

The Bond films have recently been restored and special editions have been put on dvd and blu-ray. I decided to rent and watch them in order (one every couple of weeks). Not all are on blu-ray but most are. First of all, the newly restored versions of the older flicks like Dr. No look absolutely fantastic (of course anything with Ursula Anders in it is bound to look fantastic). Anyway, I got to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and wasn't really expecting this one to be all that good. This is the one that has a Bond, George Lazenby that no one seems to like and I've never really heard anyone say good things about this film. I watched it last night and I loved it. Now, George Lazenby is no Sean Connery (who is?) but he wasn't bad. To be fair, no one can touch Sean Connery as Bond. The actual movie has a great action packed story and Telly Savalas is excellent as the villain, Blofeld. This movie is different from the other Bond flicks with James Bond actually falling in love with one of the beauties. The movie has a much different kind of ending than any other Bond film too. Anyway, if you've never seen it, it is really worth renting.

Bought the blu-ray of Titanic yesterday and watched a couple of the new documentaries with James Cameron talking with experts and members of the Titanic board, trying to figure out exactly (we'll really never know for sure) how she sank, mostly about what happened to her after she went under. Looks like Cameron got a couple things wrong, such as the angle that the ship rose up after she started taking on water. But, mind you, his film was done before the much-needed technology we have today was there. Looks like it didn't go straight up as shown in the film, but it did (obviously) break apart, but in a slightly different area than was shown in his film. Small quibbles. It's pretty chilling to see what they think happened, which they show in 3-D computer graphics. Can't imagine what it would have been like to be alive, inside her when she was sinking. Brrrr!!!! I have Thursday and Friday off and will be watching the film one of those nights, probably tomorrow night!! Should be amazing on blu-ray! Yes, it may be a 'cheesy' love story (as Cameron says- it's Romeo and Juliet on Titanic!) but it's a damn fine film in it's own right.

The Incredibles. Again. Must've been the umpteenth time, sounds about right. I just love it. One of the best written, best directed movies--not just animated movies--I've ever seen. Holly Hunter, Craig T Nelson, and Jason Lee are wonderful. The animation is fascinating and was totally unique for its time. They play it like a Bond movie including a Bond-type score. I've always considered it my second favorite James Bond movie after Goldfinger.

I just watched this great little indie horror from Australia called The Tunnel. Great for a cheap fright, it's presented like a documentary that uses footage from news crew who go off the radar looking for a story in the sewers underneath Sydney. Instead, the story finds them. Some heart-stopping moments, sound effects are fantastic, it's the best Blair Witch-style film I've seen. It's free, you can watch the whole movie on youtube.
