    Re: Favourite Quotes and Quotations

I finished East of Eden last night, and it has so many good quotations:

    Re: Robert R McCammon

I read Boy's Life a couple months ago and loved it. After that, I read Swan Song, which I didn't care for (well, I enjoyed it up until the last quarter or so). I guess I found the more fantastic...

    Re: Favourite Quotes and Quotations

I recently bought a volume of William James essays from my library (this book was the treasure of the batch -- only 2bucks!). Anyway, I've gleaned a couple of nuggets:

    "Truth indeed! How should...

    Re: Favourite Quotes and Quotations

Kim L., you've caused me to blow the dust off my wcw book. Thank you. You know how books will sometimes open by their own volition, as if they know what you're looking to read (one more argument...

I botched that link with too many http's. It really is a great poem, so here's a second shot with just the plain link: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/archive/poem.html?id=178270

    Antiquity breached mortality with myths.
    Narcissus is vocabulary. Hermes decorates
A Cornice on the Third National Bank. Vocabulary
Becomes confusion, decoration a blight; the Parthenon

    Re: Favourite Quotes and Quotations

I picked up 'essays from four decades' by allen tate a while back; it's very good. Here's an excerpt from the essay 'religion and the old south':

This modern mind sees only half of the horse --...

    Re: Robert R McCammon

I started reading Boy's Life after seeing this thread (I really wanted to read Swan Song, but my library doesn't have that one) and have to say he's a fine writer. I'm only 60 pages or so in, but...

    Re: Favourite Quotes and Quotations

I've got a soft spot for kierkegaard. Here's one of his that I like:

"The biggest danger, that of losing oneself, can pass off in the world as quietly as if it were nothing; every other loss, an...

Re: what is god to you?

My post was too long! Here's the last part:

No one said we have perfect knowledge, only that we have a better way of acquiring it nowadays. And the good thing about science is that ...

Re: what is god to you?

QUOTE=pathoftheturtle;348923]With only a shallow understanding, I think that belief in God can indeed be only superstition. I hate to be insulting, but if you carry a cross with just a vague idea...

Re: what is god to you?

Though I'm not trying to generalize, this may be impossible to avoid given the type of idea I'm suggesting. I understand that religion exists today (and I don't think it's a bad thing). I'm...

Re: what is god to you?

What's a fact? The probability of a cell arising is what? 1 in 10^57,800. And that came about 'in a year or something'? 'That's a fact'?

Point me in the direction where gradual evolution has...

The cell is vastly more complex than darwin could have ever dreamed. And on top of that, how the cell could have come out of cosmic soup is even more unfathomable -- and something evolutionary...

Re: what is god to you?

Perhaps, but we do know the mechanism of thunder. I'm not being overly secure about that knowledge -- it's just knowledge. And with that knowledge there's no way to attribute any force beyond the...

Re: what is god to you?

I tend to think of god as originating from some nebulous concept of mystery. One of my favorite thoughts to consider is stripping myself of all scientific knowledge and imaging the sound of thunder....
