You are right, but still... Well, maybe in a not so near future someone will make it properly.

The thing I don't understand is why they didn't cancel the project before starting pre-production, casting, etc.

Is this true? THR is saying in no uncertain terms that the project is definitely died because Imagine already tried very hard to shop it elsewhere in the past months but came up empty and the article...

So...what is going to happen now? Is this definitely the end ?
