I like it that there are two versions of The Gunslinger...and anyone who has read the series can guess why.
I read the revised...1st...& I did read the original...enjoyed both, but for different reasons.
A long time ago, I was weary about starting the gunslinger because of its reputation, but I was on a bit of a western 'high' - mostly off the back of the amazing video game red dead redemption - so gave it a go. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and found it easy reading, even with the introduction to Rolands language differences.
I bought the first book off Amazon for my ex girlfriend our first Christmas together. It came late so I decided to read it myself. As soon as I read it I bought her another copy and myself the second. I was absolutely infatuated with the world Roland inhabits. It's funny. She didn't really like it. She eventually bought the second one but she couldn't understand why I was so enthralled. She was a pretty devout Christian though and I think how frank it is in regards to sex put her off a little. Prudishness ruins all the most enjoyable things.
I bought it in late 2007 and couldn't get into it at first. I eventually read it in mid 2008.
It's not nearly as boring as I remember it that first time I tried reading it.
I had such a hard time with The Gunslinger that it put me off the entire DT series. Until last summer. WTTK changed me forever.
I really didn't like The Gunslinger at first... The pace was off, too slow, and I felt it had too much... I don't know... TRYING in it. Like he was trying to hard. But, if I start a book, I finish it, no matter what, so I did. And then of course I went on with The Drawing of the Three, and was hooked instantly. The Dark Tower is like crack to me, I love it, I read it again and again and again. And each and every time I get something new out of it.
Right now I'm in the process of having a scene from it tatooed on my arm :) That's how much I love the story :D
I liked The Gunslinger but I read it long before the second book was published so I had to read it again before reading the second book and then I had to wait for the third book and then got frustrated when the first book was revised making me have to read it again which I didn't do so I never have read the third book which seems to be the one everyone likes.
You can actually see it on my profile pic :) It's just the lines though, the center still has to be filled with the tower (Covering my existing tattoo) and the field of roses, and then everything has to be colored and shaded. The lines were done just a week ago and I need to ga back another 2 times so It'll be at least 2 months before it's finished.
I sent my tattoo artist a 22 page Word document with all elements I wanted in the tattoo, grouped in 'Has to remain exactly like this' and 'needs to be in but design is open to artistic freedom' along with a bunch of Dark Tower tattoo's I liked the style of, and he came trough with an absoluely PERFECT design :)
