Happy Birthday Richard Matheson!
From my "Writer's Almanac" today:
It's the birthday of the writer who caused Stephen King to say: "When people talk about genre, I guess they mention my name first, but without Richard Matheson I wouldn't be around. He is as much my father as Bessie Smith was Elvis Presley's mother." Horror and science fiction writer Richard Matheson (books by this author) was born in Allendale, New Jersey (1926). He wrote for television shows, including The Twilight Zone and Star Trek, and he wrote more than 20 novels and 100 short stories. His most famous books include I Am Legend (1954), The Shrinking Man(1956), later retitled The Incredible Shrinking Man, and What Dreams May Come (1978).

Hell House is a damn good, scary read. I highly recommend it. :y:

I've never read any of his books. I will search if I can find some of his books here and give them a try.

He's one of the best out there in any genre!! Happy Birthday!!
Re: Happy Birthday Richard Matheson!
I really liked "Hell House" and his Collected Best Short Stories are masterful, old-fashioned, nostalgic horror/sf. I wasn't too keen on "Somewhere in Time," though.

But, if you ever see the movie version with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymore, keep the box of Kleenex handy!

What about the first time you saw Duel, the first spine tingler from Steven Spielberg, screenplay by Richard Matheson adapted from his own short story.
A real classic!

Yes and I would be amiss to not add that he writes some of the best Westerns I have ever read. Journal of the Gun Years is a must read.
