Roland's quest for the Tower

I discussed this before, but maybe not n this forum. Can't find it here anyway.

Who sent Roland on his quest for the tower?

I'm rereading the series, and currently near the end of Wizard and Glass. I think I might have finally figured this out, but I'd like to hear other people's opinion.

I think it was Maerlyn's Rainbow (the pink glass). I don't think he was actually going to the tower prior to that, was he?

I get the idea he saw the Tower in Maerlyn's Glass and from then on, it became his destiny.

The answer is yes. Absolutely. His experience "inside" the pink glass
set him on a quest for the tower. He enlisted his two mates as well.
They got side tracked at the battle of Jerico Hill. ..but
Roland survived and set out for the Tower alone.
