The Washington Redskin's name has been a source of controversy for a long time and lately the controversy is heating up again. Here is Roger Goodell's letter to congress defending the name:

I, like many of us, feel that political correctness has been taken to ridiculous extremes the past few years but I don't really consider this issue political correctness, I think the name is offensive and it's time to get rid of it. I don't have a problem with the other Native American names like Seminoles, etc. but "Redskins" is different. I think most all of the high schools and colleges that used that name have replaced it so I think it's time for the NFL to drop it too. The Washington franchise would not be hurt by this. They are not going to lose fans over a name change and as far as the cost of a name change goes, their current merchandise would be snapped up by collectors in about 5 minutes. There are other costs involved too but I think maybe the league should offer to help pay for those instead of defending this name.
