My friend & I have been reading Skeleton Crew together. We just discussed "The Wedding Gig" last night & we both agreed that it was less than exciting. I am a huge SK fan & I was mad at myself for not liking something he wrote. What are your opinions about this story? Also, does this collection have a running theme that you've noticed?

Never be sorry for being less than excited about something SK wrote. Any author as prolific as he is, is bound to come up with things you like more than others. As for The Wedding Gig, it wasn't supernatural, but was creepy in it's own way. Perhaps sinister is a better word. Leave it for a while and go back. Sometimes a re read gets better.

That's what re reads are for-- different time in your life, different mood, different reaction.

...I view it as one of his early "True Crime" stabs(sorry)myself.....

I finished this story last night. The material is not what one would call "typical" King in that the supernatural isn't woven into plot. I liked his use of language. It gave the story a feel for the late 1920's/30's. This was originally published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in 1980, so I am thinking he was solicited for a submission and SK looked through his files and said, "Let's see if they will take this." And they did. And now we are talking about it on the internet 33 years later...
