My personal thoughts on how often we hear about abusive, or even behaviour that just goes completely against the faith/or rules of Priesthood is this: No matter how much you devote yourself to your vocation, because you are male... chances are you are going to be at a constant battle with sexual inappropriateness.
The male of the human species, has been hardwired since creation/evolution/whatever you believe--to procreate... to carry on the human species; and to help him in his task, he was endowed :oo: with sexual urges that are (almost) impossible to suppress. (naturally)
Often the feelings of guilt that accompany these urges, seem to feed the cycle of abuse/or inappropriate behaviour, compounding the problem.
*Disclaimer... this is not an attack on men, really. ;-)

...I have never understood the whole prohibition against priests being married, plus I think it's way past time that women join the priesthood...

The Catholic church should be changing with the times. Priests use to be able to get married when this was a new religion. If they refuse to change this silly law, then the young men wanting to be priests should join the Anglican church. When I changed from Catholic to Anglican, I discovered that the refrains during holy service was the same ones we used in the Catholic church.
Women would make everything better.

I have the feeling, given time, this new Pope Francis may make many changes within the Catholic Church.

you're wishing, right ??
the RC has been drifting backwards since JP2 died: that sort of thinking is very vatican2...not at all where most of the clergy in power are...especially, it seems, those from third world countries
nah...unless he's a sheep in wolfs cloaks 'n all...he'll not do a thing about that
not at all surprised...but i'm still trying to figure out...so, he's been 'married' since 1999...yet he is accused fondling a 17 year last year.............................................s o................................he really is like half the old married men out there, right ???
wonder what wifey'll get in the divorce.....or will that be an annulment :wink2:
...and just how does an ordained catholic priest come on to a girl, anyway: hey, baby...wanna eat my host ? want a little wine with that ??

abuse is just everywhere. nothing is very surprising anymore.

except, KFF...it has always been there...it has never not been there
we should never, ever lose sight of the fact that this sort of thing has always plagued every religion...every religious group...and every societal strucure...
this happens repeatedly because we have, by and large, almost always, as a species, surrendered our individuality to our 'leaders'...whomever that may be...and follow rather than question and be responsible
look at how many people these days base all their political thoughts and philosophies on what their religion instructs them...
not through a thorough examination of issues, and alot of soul searching...or what they truly feel...but what their leader currently interprets life, the universe and everything as
case in very recent point: that senator who spent oodles and gobs of time denying 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' to an awful lot of americans...until it affected his own son...
or that anti-abortion cretin who walked into a church...shot dead a doctor at worship with his family...all while having abandoned his own family
and the politicians, by and large are not immune...that same sen., those that went after clinton, all while cheating on their wives, or sleeping with same-sex staffers...to the mccarthy hunts (is that sort of philosophy any much different than the current hunt for RHINO's withing the R party ?? no...)
it is all a power grab...a power play...and we, the average schmoe...will always be on the short end if we do not wise up

I believe in some cases men who are already married can become Roman Catholic priests. I think the idea of priests never getting married went from 'a good idea so they could devote themselves to the service of Christ 24/7' to an official edict somewhere along the way. Peter had a mother-in-law, so it's safe to assume he was married.
Priests in my denomination can be married, as is the case in most denominations/branches of Christianity.
But he knew what he was getting into when he got ordained Roman. Seems like it would've been better to go to the Anglican church or maybe an offshoot of the Roman church that allows for married priests, than to have a secret marriage.
I don't look for the Roman church to change the edict anytime soon, though. The bishops and cardinals probably believe (and rightly so) that if you change one thing related to morality, you'll get more and more pressure to change other things as well.

last i looked into it, the priest had to be either a widower...or have had his marriage annulled...he could not be involved, in any way, with a female...
alls' i know is, in my family, some had it pegged that i would become a priest...my thinking was...
are you nuts ?!?!
