View Full Version : Do you twitter? Do you tweet?

I have only lately been paying attention to my twitter account. It's kinda cool but it appears that I am too lazy to find out how to tweet correctly and or how to practice etiquette therein. Been tweeting anyhow though LOL. I find it rather amusing, daunting and a good exercise in editing, trying to express myself in 140 characters or less.

Neil Gaiman and Joe Hill are great tweeters.... in any other context that may not be a compliment.
Our Bev Vincent is there, (Hi Bev!) I enjoy reading his tweets too. So anyhow, what do you think about the twitter machine?

Me too... I'm pretty sure that I'm doing it wrong, though.

I always wondered why anybody would start an international message site and call it twitter when the definition of a twit is a foolish person. I have never twitted and do not consider myself a twit or a twitter. Tweeting I will leave to the birdies.

No offence to those who enjoy twitter but there we have it again with my opinion of choosing appropriate names which is an old but important principle in the magic arts as well as the science of perception in the subconscience.

I never got it before, despite trying a few times, but I just started up in conjunction with my blog, and ... I love it. As you say, Joe Hill and Neil Gaiman are great. I've found so much through them that I wouldn't have otherwise. It took me more than a decade, but I'm finally hip with the Twitter.

I tweet every now and then. I even have followers. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :38_002: Most of whom I've known online for a while from Brian Keene's old board or other message boards.

I kind of feel weird when I see famous people (or at least people who are much more well known than I am) "following" me. It's not like they know me or anything and I don't think my tweets are all that good, but whatever. It's just Twitter, lol.

I like the fact that twitter is unidirectional -- I can follow someone and they don't have to follow me back (and vice versa). That means my feed contains only people I'm truly interested in. I can catch up in a few minutes instead of scrolling through pages of Facebook updates. I also like the fact that you have the chance to directly interact with people who are normally out of reach. This week I had a response to one of my tweets from Jeff Probst from Survivor. (No buff, though...)

Agree. I've had a few responses and even a retweet from David Malki ! (creator of the amazing Wondermark), and I GEEKED OUT. (But not in public. In public I was totally cool about it.)

I'm lucky I can find my voice mail on a cell phone. No tweeting for me.
Blunt- you are not technologically challenged -- the world just moved on and we're still in second gear.

The best thing about Twitter is that I've yet to get one Farmville request. :y:

twitter is maybe the top information site on earth now, IMO. I primarily consider it a clipping service, i.e. for links to interesting stuff, and that is what I tend to share as well. If you consider yourself any kind of data-miner, twitter is a top source. further in terms of real time live information, there is no better source on the internet. if something in the world is happening now that you need to know about, you go to twitter first.

I have only been re-tweeted once, and never been responded to by anyone. (With the exception of my lovely sister.)
That's o.k. though, it's just for fun and to catch bits of news to investigate that I may have missed otherwise. I don't take social-media-techno-whatsits too seriously. I do facebook too but it's just a kick in the pants. I can't see investing my self image in what people think about me, either here on earth or out there in cyberspace.
But in all honesty, I think I would maybe poo myself if someone like Neil Gaiman or J.K. Rowling replied to me. Actually I'm not even sure if I'd know that they did. I still don't know how to track that sort of thing.

Here's one of my all time favorite tweets.

Joe Hill ‏@joe_hill
It's like announcing the anarchist's meeting is at 8PM. If you show up, you fail as an anarchist. If you bring cookies, you're hopeless.

very well said.

i've only recently set up a twitter account and I'm learning. Still not clear on all the short forms used. But I had great timing in joining. This past weekend was the AAAI meeting, and I started following one of the doctors that attended it. I found his tweets very interesting.

I just started it. Like three days ago.

I am trying to get an art gallery/ blog up and twitter is a very effective means of communication. 160 characters at a time.

After seeing this thread and of course knowing there was such a thing as Twitter, and looking at the site itself and not understanding it at all, I joined the other day. Now what do I do?

I have a Twitter account and check in on it from time to time, but I'm not really that much into it. Though I have had Clive Barker and Fairuza Balk reply to questions I've asked, so that was pretty cool.

Twitter is a lot of fun during things like the Oscars, when people can get quite snarky.

Took me a long time to catch on, even though in general I really engage with social media. A lot of people join Twitter to try to get followers, and ... maybe I am doing it wrong, but I find that now that I'm following people who interest me, suddenly it's become way more valuable, so for me, quality > quantity. Examples: Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself) tends to tweet and retweet a lot of interesting things, stuff he's doing as well as stuff that interests him. Joe Hill (@joe_hill) tweets pretty interesting commentary, some links, some life stuff. Businesses often tweet about special offers, etc. It's all in what you personally find interesting.

Besides following people, so that you see everything they tweet, you can also search what are called hashtags. For example, last week Kansas City had a big fire on the Plaza, the premier shopping/dining district. People were using the hashtag #plazafire to discuss it in their tweets, so that made it really easy for me to keep up with the latest, much faster than the news was being updated. Also, on Fridays, if you search for the hashtag #ff, you will see recommendations of people to follow.

And then of course, you can tweet as well. General commentary, stuff about trending hashtags, cool links, etc. You can even retweet the tweets of others you find interesting.

I do have a twitter, but I wish I knew how to put my user name up. Just not sure how to do it, I've even tried the whole copy and paste thing, but it doesn't recognize the address. It's either something to do with A E Angel (my pen name) or the name of my book. I hope you can find me, I do like to tweet. (Wink! Wink!)

Just go to Twitter and click on your name in the upper left-hand corner. Then copy the URL (e.g. https://twitter.com/BevVincent). People will be able to find you that way.

I've never done it. I've gone to a couple of accounts and read some but don't really understand how it works. I guess the only way to figure it out is to get an account and try it.

I started up with the Twitter to annoy politicians but it appears I have stayed for the dip.
There are a lot of creative people on Twitter which makes it interesting, lots of wing-nuts though too, wheat and chaff as they say.

Well, that will help. But, I don't really know the etiquette yet. And I don't want to offend people.

I really miss having a "like" button though.

I know right! The "favorite" is a close approximation, though.
