I am so sorry about the snow. If it would just stay off the roads, it could be somewhat tolerable. And if the wind wouldn't blow, that would make things a teensy bit better.

Spring, where are you?

Good advice here Spideyman and I will be doing all that. At least the good thing with a lot of snow is if you lose power you have plenty to melt to keep the toilets flushed!!

Any hints on teaching my dog how to shovel?

I'd thought it was only 12" but then I looked ahead and saw the additional 6" they're predicting on top of that by the end of the day on Saturday. I'm hoping it's just a case of over-zealousness on the part of the weather forecasters but at least I won't have to go out in it until they've had a chance to get it cleaned up. Stay safe down there!

As well you should! Seriously, though, I would not want to have to deal with your hot, humid summers or go through hurricane and tornado seasons which is why no matter how bad the winters are here I would never move to a place like Florida or for that matter any of the tornado alley states. Don't think I could handle it.

They’re predicting about 12” here in the Poconos. I just had a new generator installed and tied it into my breaker box last week. I can run everything except for my heat pump (the fireplace and fans will serve to heat the house) As my luck goes, I thought for sure it was an insurance plan guaranteeing we wouldn’t get any more bad weather this year.

Every winter since the ice storm of '98, I've thought about getting a generator but didn't want to spend the money and we've rarely been without power for more than a few hours so talk myself out of it. Now I've acquired what I recognize as a reverse superstition thinking that if I get one, we'll have a major outage. I understand logically that that makes no sense as it wouldn't matter if we did because I'd have the generator for backup but yet I still resist. And even worse, since I already have propane tanks for other appliances, I could buy a propane powered generator and tie it right into those so that I wouldn't even have to worry about being able to have gasoline on hand to fuel the generator.

Where I live, since moving in, I’ve had to deal with bad winter and ice storms, hurricanes and even a couple of tornadoes. So I have a year round problems and I’ve always felt I needed one. The day after I finished moving into my house we had a terrible ice storm and were without power for days.

I use propane to run the fireplace so I also considered a propane generator, but they were just so dang expensive. I opted for a portable gas generator instead, so I could transport it for other needs. (And I had connections… so the generator, wiring and hookup only ran me about $1,450). Unfortunately after it was delivered, I discovered “portable” was a relative term, as I would need a truck and forklift to transport it. :eek2:

What I found nice about the propane generators was you could have it automatically run if the power goes out, so being home to get everything going wasn’t necessary. They also help in a home's resale value.

I've always found the prospect of tornadoes less alarming than hurricanes. With tornadoes, statistically you'll probably never be hit. With hurricanes, if you're in the common pathways, your gonna get it at some point.

But I agree about summer. I hate summer. If I could live somewhere with a temp ranging between 45 and 70, maybe 75 on a hot day, and a decent amount of humidity, I'd be in absolute heaven. (I would miss snow a little bit, but I'd get over it.)

Mod, surely Steve has convinced you by now? Florida is awesome. The summer is like winter here. You just stay inside a lot. Hurricanes? Meh, no big deal really. The other 6 months is like it is right now, or even nicer. Humidity is low, it rarely rains. But enjoy being a popsicle!

Encase your mailbox in concrete. That'll learn 'em and spare you the expense of replacing your mailbox all the time.

There is so much concrete already in the ground now from post holes, it’s getting hard to find a place to put the mailbox anymore. Not all were because of drunks -- just most, and I always help them out if they are decent enough to stop. One was a marine trying to get to base in time to make his deployment to the middle east. After hitting the slopes and finding an icy patch in front of my house he took out my mailbox he then hit a telephone pole. I told him not to worry about it and helped him to get his dented fender away from the tire so he could make it to base in time and not get in trouble. Another was a school teacher who going back to Maryland after skiing. She hit a deer and took my mailbox out. She was visibly shaken, quite upset, and an animal rights crusader. I invited her in to stay warm until she could make other arrangements, called her insurance company for her, and told her I would take care of the deer so it’s loss would go to feed someone. Too dang freekin’ soft for my own good at times I guess. :dunno:

it's going to be worse for southern Maine along the coast. Has been snowing since about 7:30 this morning here and I guessed about 3" at the office but we've just had a bit of a break in the snow and the sun is breaking through the clouds. Of course, that happened right after I panicked because the snow was coming down so hard and decided to go home to finish up the day here so am now feeling silly.

How did everyone else make out? We got close to two feet I guess, but the darn wind was howling so I'm not really sure what our exact measurement was. Massachusetts and Connecticut got hammered with close to 3 feet in spots and a lot of people without power. Shore communities mostly I guess. I'm thinking we got off pretty lucky, but don't tell my dog that. I took him out early on Saturday morning and the wind had drifted the snow up to about half-way up on the door. He turned and looked at me like "What, you expect me to go out in that?" :smile2:

Official accumulation total for Bangor was 18" so feeling like we got off easier than our friends to the south and never lost power throughout the storm which was the best part. Haven't been out since Friday so don't know how the roads are but will find out tomorrow. I guess it was officially sixteen inches here, but I'm thinking that was just from the drifts. It looked more like eight inches.

They take good care of the roads here, so traveling wasn't too bad in my area. It was a bit worse up north. It helps that my vehicles are good in snow, and have good tires.
