It's illegal to sell, use in products, or even possess I'm pretty sure (like Eagle and other birds of prey feathers and stuff), ambergris here in the US, it's because of the endangered status of the Sperm Whale:wink2:.

You can't even keep and Eagle feather if you found one. You have to turn it in. (Unless you are from certain Native American tribes)

Whales were once killed specifically for their ambergris. (Their meat was also consumed and the blubber melted down for all kinds of uses.)
Ambergris is now (mostly) chemically reproduced for the perfume industry, although there are reports I've read of ambergris being sold on the black market to French parfumeurs by Japanese whalers. Whaling isn't illegal in Japan.

I saw this article, and I knew exactly what it was because I'd read Jitterbug Perfume. Did anyone else read that? I don't know that I've read anything else by the same author, but I remember reading that book and wishing I could crawl into it and smell everything the characters were smelling...

I know, right? Or baby puke? I've got that in spades. Somedays I think Torleif is yarping up so much, it must be food we haven't even fed him yet. Future barf. I swear the other day I combed a full turkey dinner with all the trimming right out of my hair, and I don't expect to feed that to him until November!

If only we could find a market for THAT!

As I write this, I own that EB book. I loved EB.

I used to love Encyclopedia Brown! It was so great how you had to turn to the back to get the answer, so you had a chance to try to figure it out for yourself first. I used to feel so smart when I could sort out the ending on my own.
