That's just so wrong in so many ways. Where's the comfy overstuffed chair to sit in/ or rocker to rock in/or sofa to stretch out on with tons of pillows. How about a nice beach chair/blanket on the sandy beach- heck it's warm in FL. The world moved on.........

I don't like this idea NO not at all. Library without books, what library is that. :glare:

Eh, I don't mind so much. I love my library, but honestly, I don't stay there for any length of time; the only time I ever have is while doing research homework as a teenager ... or flipping through an especially interesting book in the research only section. Otherwise, I check out books and take them home ... to my comfy chair, my tea, my fuzzy warm socks. There is something especially cozy about checking out a book on my Kindle without ever once leaving the comfort of my home. And hey, if e-readers can lure kids to reading, by all means, let this happen.

(That being said, some books, because of their format, are just easier to read in one format or the other. I would not like to be forced to only read e-books. Or, for that matter, physical books.)

Why even have that kind of library at all, couldn't the same thing be accomplished a lot cheaper online? Seems like more of a publicity stunt than a library.

Reading that article and seeing how clinical everything looks makes me want to smash my kindle and run down to the library asap! I'm ashamed to say it's been a long time since I've been in the library--the university academic library doesn't count!--growing up I practically lived there. Now I always buy my books, both real and ebooks...the world really has moved on and it looks like I moved along with it, without even realising. I think I will visit the library this weekend and see what treasures they have waiting to be discovered. :smile2:

Speaking as a former poor child, the library is a haven for children whose parents can't afford to buy them books. They'll be checking out e-readers as well. It also is a quiet study space, if you need something like that. That being said, I think the design could use some tweaking.

I agree with your little face.

All of you e-reader reader's out there - this is what you're making the world come to. You scare me.

Someone tell me what happens when we have a massive worldwide blackout and we can no read? (Okay, maybe I watch too much Revolution.)

And that should definitely say "not read" not "no read."

Oops. I'm passionate.

When we have a massive blackout the books will probably be the first thing people burn.

Anyhoo, I still buy all of my favourite books in paper format. I prefer real books but I love that if I'm bored and want to buy a book to read instantly then I can just download it straight to my Kindle.

Libraries today are suffering from an identity crisis! They are rooted in the past but are trying to keep up with today's technology. I want the library to stay the way it was in my childhood-- quiet, softly lit, and overflowing with books. I even miss that comforting, slightly musty smell that would greet you when you entered. I get depressed when I go to the library now. Half the space is devoted to computers, the lights are too bright, and people don't even really bother to whisper.

AH! So THIS is why I need a gun. So I can shoot someone who tries to burn my books when the lights go out! I'm running out to get my AK-47.

Until I read it, I wondered what the point was, "Will it just be an empty building where we will go just to be shushed?"

I see what they're saying.

It's odd. There's nothing about having e-books available that means they CAN'T also have paper books. Lots of library systems do both. Mine does, and has for a while now. Of course, there isn't an unlimited budget, but if they're not splashing out tons of money for those clinical readers IN the library, that should go a long way towards keeping both kinds of books. (Besides, those readers will be outdated soon, don't look comfortable, and how many people sit in the library to read a whole book anyway?)

I guess I don't get it. We've had a Kindle for a few years now, and we still buy a lot of traditional books. (And not just so we have something to burn when society goes south, although Ally's comment did give me a giggle. :wink2:) I don't know why a LIBRARY of all things would feel the need to go either/or.

I think it's a worthwhile social experiment. If it doesn't work out, well, they can always add shelving and paper books. Aren't you all at least curious to know how it will turn out? I am.

LOL ... I know I'm in the minority on this one. I just can't help but imagine how I would have reacted as a kid if someone told me I could check out 20 books from the library and they would all fit in my backpack with room leftover for homework. I would have just peed my pants with excitement; I'm sure of it.

Now that is true. (At least, the part of the space we can see; you can tell from the description that we can't see it all.) But I don't know anyone who *reads* reads at the library anyway. When I go to the library, I'm a hunter looking for a kill. I pick up whatever I have on hold and then prowl through the stacks looking for more fresh meat. But once I have it, I don't eat it right there. I drag it back to my own lair. :biggrin2:

The smell of a library is sacred. Old books have the greatest smell in the world!!
