The title is self explanatory. I don't want to make this a survey. It's just idle curiosity on my part - thanks!

Once my husband tried to teach me one part of Heart and Soul. (This was way before we were married.) He got irritated and said "well look if you're not even going to TRY." But I was. I was trying.

Aw - cut that out. You'll make me cry. I never got the opportunity to learn myself actually and I wish I had!

It's okay. No one can be great at everything. At least I can dance. :biggrin2: (I do not understand how a person can be able to play an instrument or even sing on cue but have no apparent sense of bodily rhythm, but I have seen it with my own two eyes.) I think playing the drums would be beyond cool.

Really if we had kids, them learning a musical instrument would be the one thing I would absolutely insist on. The persistence and self-discipline it engenders is invaluable.

I have the Music Studio app, which is almost as good as was free for a while.

I've played since I was young, but not very well. Purely for my own entertainment.

Glad to hear you have a sense of rhythm. I am old enough to remember the old aerobics classes back in the 80s and I swear one of the instructors had no rhythm. She was playing nice bouncy music but just doing her own thing completely apart from the beat of the music.

The real reason I ask if people can play piano is actually this: (yes I have an ulterior motive!) I am a medical transcriptionist and it has been noted by me that those girls who had piano lessons are the fastest typists. Even in high school when I took a one year course in grade 11 called 'Personal Typing' the instructor told us that the only ones who might pick it up faster were those who had played piano in the past. I don't think he meant the one finger row, row, row your boat type of playing but actual lesson.

Man - how I wish my parents had thought to get me piano lessons! We even had an upright piano in one of the houses my Dad bought. Oh well - such is life...

As Spidey says 'Love and green lights to all' as I must go home now. My shift ended 30 minutes ago :oh:

I took a keyboard/piano class in eighth grade, but all I remember from that is how to play When the Saints Go Marching in. And only one handed.

I don't think I have the coordination to play the drums, but I can make some awful sounds with the guitar.

I really do believe the piano is the best place to start. You get all your basics.

Yeah, that is what my husband (Mr. Multiple Instruments--piano, sax, clarinet, guitar) says, and I am sure he is right. "Learn the piano and you can play anything."

Made to take lesson when a child. Hated it. Regret not paying more attention. Can still play a little when a piano is available.

I used to play piano when I was a younger but I never learned anything and
when I had to train my homework I always had something else to do. So my piano
teacher asked me once why I even take these lessons when I don't want to learn
anything. So I quit the piano playing.

So Mr. Multiple Instruments can play 'em, but he evidently does not have the patience to teach 'em. :eyebrow:

I bet if you studied Ms. Mod's app video you could learn to play that tune.

Me? give me a beat and I am up and moving to it!!

Catholic school, eh? Did they have black and white habits with those weird things that hid their hair? I remember in Toronto back in the sixties having those nuns in grade 1. I was petrified of them. One had a big hand bell and she would stand at the doorway and ring it when recess was over. We had to all line up and march back into the school in our little uniforms. No wonder I jointed the military when I was in my twenties! ha ha

Oh, the Heart & Soul thing ... Well, we were teenagers. He comes from a very musical family. I do not think it occurred to him at the time that someone's hand-eye coordination could be quite so ... lacking. (I think I may have improved somewhat since then.)

In my early 20s I had the same exact thing happen with another friend who was trying to teach me to play tennis. It took me until my mid 20s to really, truly grasp what my gym teachers meant when they said "keep your eye on the ball." I really think if they just would have said "stop watching your hands" I might have caught on earlier and not always been the last one picked for softball. :biggrin2:

In five years you'll be in your late 50s regardless of whether you learn to play or not. That is, the time will pass anyway. I say go for it!

I used to play, and still own a trumpet. I've been thinking about picking it back up again...but I'll wait until I no longer live in an apartment. I know there are mutes, but I hate the way they sound while I'm practicing.

I wish I would have learned to play piano, though to be fair, all of my mother-in-law's siblings can play, so I could learn if I was inclined. And so can Todash's husband, obviously. lol

Yes, they did. Once we saw some hair sticking out of one of them :eek2: Shocking! It was the talk of the school.

I did get to play the triangle in 8th grade music appreciation class. Does that count? I believe it was to some Elton John song, that was right when the 'Yellow Brick Road' album came out. I still remember the teacher predicting that Elton was going to be around for a long time. Who knew?!

I know the rudiments of the piano and can two-finger my way through a melody and bang out a few chords. But my Hubby can play VERY well.

A few songs by ear, including Finlandia and parts of classical pieces that I've figured out. I can't read music.

I can play piano well enough to plink out melodies by ear, and if you give me a loooooong run up to it, to play simple pieces.

However, I can play a MEAN soprano recorder. If anyone's trying to get a medieval wind ensemble together, I'm your girl. I have to preface that by saying I haven't played in a while. I have a couple of friends that I used to play with in college, mostly when we were drunk, which was often. Why yes, we were known all over campus as the "drunk recorder girls." And probably worse things. But we really enjoyed ourselves!

Recorder

Our proudest achievement was to be able to play a 3-part arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon. Even if you don't know the name of it, you've heard it a MILLION times. We thought it was the height of hilarity to call it Taco Bell's Canon. You probably had to be there.

Here's a guy playing Taco Bell's Canon on the recorder. But he's playing on a treble recorder, which has a much lower and nicer tone. And he's playing...well, better that we used to. He's probably sober. Imagine this with more mistakes and squeakier, but with lots of joy and gusto!

Anyway, hit me up if you need a happy and fun, but not necessarily good, piano or recorder player!

Hey there Jen - we had Pachelbel's Canon at our wedding on the piano. That was on top of the church bells ringing and the piper outside creating a lovely racket with his bagpipes. Maybe we will call you for our anniversary to play your recorder :wink2:
