I really enjoyed this book, even though its not like most other Stephen King books - I would like to read some other fantasy books in a similar vain (almost like a fable I guess) by other authors (I've read The Wind Through the Keyhole and enjoyed the middle story similarly).

I should have known that you've read The Once and Future King! My all time favorite book, just another thing to like about GNTLGNT!! I'd also suggest the Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell - it's another Arthurian telling, but very unique and with a similar fantasy/legend sort of feel.

Watership Down is another one that I'd recommend. The story itself is amazing, but within it there are tales that the rabbits tell of their own myths and legends, and those are some of my favorite parts which are much akin to The Wind Throught the Keyhole.

Ok, I've put Watership Down and TOAFK on my list for Santa. Can you recommend a specific book by Anne McCaffery?

Try Piers Anthony's Xanth series of novels. They are very "punny" and clever and not like a lot of the other, more serious books people have recommended. I remember The Eyes of the Dragon as having some typical SK humor to it. The Xanth novels are a great blend of fantasy and humor. There are 35 of them (!) but you can start anywhere in the series and enjoy them; and you don't have to read them all since the story just keeps going on and on and on.... If you want to start with first though, it is called A Spell for Chameleon. They do get progressively "punnier" as the series goes on, as you can tell from the titles.

You might also try the Sword of Shannara series by Terry Brooks,or the Chronicles of Prydain,by Lloyd Alexander..

Any stand-alone books? (commitment-phobe)

You can read any of the Xanth novels as a stand alone book with absolutely no fear of commitment! :biggrin2:

Not sure how appealing a punny book is. Have you got a favourite one? And are they shortish? I don't do more than 400 pages very willingly unless its King. (I'm awkward aren't I?)

Not awkward, you just have limitations. To each his own. Start with the first one, that seems logical. Amazon lists it as 352 pages.

I spread the word amongst my nearest and dearest about some of the books mentioned here before Christmas and on the big day received Watership Down. I've only read about thirty pages so far but have the feeling that I may well fall in love with this book!

It's a hard heart that cannot fall in love with Watership Down. Enjoy!

I finished Watership Down the other day!
Yay! A wonderful book that I would never have considered reading. Thank you!
