View Full Version : In Case You Wonder Why My Avatar is Gone...

When I first registered here as DUXe many years ago I chose a burning candle as an avatar pic for obvious resons. More recently, I updated my account with my name, Ayko, and I wanted to choose a new avater pic with The Devil Master but, the system will not allow it. My Opa wanted to become a member here but he cannot because the clicks and sections are so complex with no explanation I must presume whoever designed this Site wanted to make sure only certain people come so far. Of course, I realize this is not the doing of Stzephen King so, no worries. However, I am keeping a blank avatar pic from now on to protest until somebody can explain how I may load my Devil Master buddy in as avatar pic. Do not start with mobbing words that I need only click on avatar edit, we tried that. Also, why is the Site sooo user unfriendly. My Opa would also like to register...

We use software from vBulletin. It was what worked for us when we were searching for message board software that allowed moderation and our Beta testers found it easy to use. Perhaps taking a few minutes to read through the FAQ (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/faq.php) might answer some of your questions about how the Board operates.

From the FAQ (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_signatures_av atars) in the section for Signatures, Avatars and Profile Pictures:

Avatars are small images that people use to identify or distinguish themselves to other forum members. We provide some stock avatars people can use, but we do not allow members to upload their own custom avatars from their own computers. The avatar you select will be displayed as part of the user info in your posts, as well as in your public profile.

I've always found this site to be extremely user friendly.

I'm living proof the SKMB is user friendly. I'm almost computer illiterate but I'm getting around okay. Now... if I could only figure out how to use those little smiley faces in my posts...

Just click on the smiley face you see in the top row above the text box and the emoticons will pop up (assuming you don't have pop-ups disabled), find the one you want to use and click on it and it should appear in your text box. I've had problems sometimes if I'm trying to do that at the same time the page is auto-saving and have to retry a time or two--just an FYI in case that happens to you, too. :smile2:

Can't imagine why vBulletin doesn't have that option as part of their emoticon package. :biggrin2:

I'm not really fussed about an avatar but this confuses me:

we do not allow members to upload their own custom avatars from their own computers.

So... How do people have custom avatars?

They don't. They have to choose them from the list of ones we have available.

Oh, you got a pretty good selection then. Might have a browse.

Not true. One could post without an avatar pic.

Not true. One could post without an avatar pic.

I'm fully aware of that. The question was "How do people have custom avatars?" My response in context was answering that question, not how do they post without one. Since the OP has been doing so without an avatar, I'm sure he is aware of that, too.

A lot of people may confuse you for GNTLGNT with that avatar.

That's why it feels wrong. I'll change out of it in a bit and that post won't make a jot of sense.

I think the whole discussion is related to GNTLGNT avatar pic phasing without phasing, and some just don't like it but, I do..

By the way, Ms Mod, I am aware that you are aware, that avatar pics are so or are so. In fact, I bet you know better than me on this board.

I was just being macho.

You can stop that anytime. It doesn't work with me--far too old and been doing this job for too long to be impressed by it. :smile2:

"Also, why is the Site sooo user unfriendly"
I beg to disagree. I was posting something just now and when I went to leave it warned me that the changes would not be saved. That's not user unfriendly. I was a bit puzzled when I first joined but eventually with the help of other members I got most things figured out, but still learning of course. Your Opa (is that grandfather in German or Dutch?) can't be any worse than me so don't blame the site.

Marsha, I know we have a "Thank" button and a "like" button, but can we also have a "little rolly guy on the floor laughing" button? It would save you some work.....

That would be up Jordan's alley as he'd have to customize the software to get something like that added but you're not alone in wanting it. :smile2:

From the FAQ (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_signatures_av atars):

How do I set signatures, avatars and profile pictures?
You can set and change your avatar and profile picture in the User Control Panel. You cannot set a signature.
To select an existing avatar, click on 'Edit Avatar (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/profile.php?do=editavatar)'.

Those directions aren't quite as clear as they might be, though.

First go to Settings <top right of page>
Once at that page, on the far left, scroll down to My Settings, Click on Edit Avatar
Make your choice and don't forget to Save your changes before leaving the page.

Sorted. I picked that as a Mario fan rather than a baseball fan.

Those little fellas were a nightmare in Mario World 2: Yoshi's Story - so seems sort of fitting on a Stephen King board.

Sort of.
