(I even had an artist friend of mine---who is amazing--- paint me a large canvas picture of the gunslinger at the Western sea, which I would be happy to show you and I know you would dig). When I tell people why I love your stories, (and some of them are so biased against anything "mainstream" which is for the most part, kind of ridiculous considering I don't feel "mainstream" myself) I say that they are realistically beautiful. As fantastic, horror, sci-fi, crazy as they are, your stories are real to me. Normal everyday people---people who trip, fart, pick their noses, lie, scheme, and live normal everyday lives---when they can be part of something bigger, survive something seemingly insurmountable, when they can find strength they never knew or dreamed they had...I am transported. From Roland to Rose Madder...from little brother Thomas to Ol' travelin' Jack...from the Losers Club to Prince the dog to Andy Dufresne...I have loved your stories. When I have been irretrievably sad, when I have been mentally flagellating myself, when I am happy, and when I am on an even keel---your stories have always given me something. A new perspective. An escape. Someone to root for. Someone to hate. Somewhere to get happily lost.

This is what I'd like to say, if I met you at a book signing or some-such. But I'm such a ninny, all I probably could say is "I'm a big fan". And I am. :)

My belated greetings! I didn't get to post here on Friday, but what I did do was tell people all day long about the great man's special day, the joy his existence has brought to many, the inspiration his work has yielded, how we have sunk into other worlds, met other folks, and dreamed other dreams as a result of his unique perspective.

My real-world best friend's birthday was Saturday and I brought her for a meal. We ate Mediterranean vegetables, raised a glass, scooped up cake and saluted the future. I like to think my talented Mid-world friend was there in spirit too.

For those that don't know me, my name's Cheryl, folks call me CJ and I've been a King fan for 30+ yrs now. I started the social group, Stephen King Trivia here 4 years ago, yes we're still kicking! Since SK's birthday this year was a milestone, I decided to get him something special. So one night I'm on FB(yes, hopelessly addicted to it, say sorry!) and I come across this gift given to a friend of mine by her daughter. It was a tower made out of the hard cover book, Dark Tower 7. Don't ask me how she did it but I thought it was amazing! I wasn't sure how many folks I should include in the gift so decided on 19 folks, for obvious reasons(to DT fans anyway. :) I then contacted the artist, Becky Rupnow and we commissioned her to create one for SK. The result is below. We think it came out great!
We know it was delivered to SK but we aren't sure yet if he has opened/seen it. I didn't want to post to this thread until I knew he had seen it because I wanted it to be a surprise, but now that his birthday is over I guess it's o.k. to finally share it with you all.

These are the SKMB'ers that pitched in for it:

Autumnlyn had the idea to put John Dalglish's name on the top which we all thought was fitting and appropriate. 21 names in all are included on the tower and in between the beams. If I included the link correctly you should be able to see all the different angles and names.

I also included print out birthday greetings from many fans some from SKT and some from the FB group SK Central. The card I bought said it all, 'You mean SO much to so many people., Happy Birthday from two(crossed out two and put 21) of them!'

Stephen, if you are reading this, we know how much the Dark Tower means to you so wanted to give you this special gift. We hope you were blown away by it or at the very least touched by the sentiment. Thankee sai Wordslinger for all you've given us. Long birth days and present nights. xoxo

It was packed with lots of styrofoam peanuts and paper packed around it. Don't know how it got to CJ, but she and Donna brought it in their car from NH to Bangor and then it was taken in another private car to Steve so avoided more handling via delivery services which probably helped. :smile2:
