Brilliant book, just love the way Jack Torrance degenerates and the general spookiness of the hotel. Must do a re-read :)

Just started this book last night. There are many classic SK books that I haven't read yet, so it's time to get at them. Too many other writers and titles that occupied my time over the years, now that it's pretty much just Dean Koontz and SK these days, I'm making up ground.

Halfway point. I grew up with the movie, which I thought was really, REALLY good, but now I'm seeing that much is missing and/or altered (necessary build-up of emotions, important elements of the back story). And I still picture the actors in my head when reading (kind of hard not too). Having seen/read interviews from SK about what he was going through personally when he wrote this book, it makes the anger and resentment of some of the characters seem that much richer.

Just finished it. Wow. Very good.
Chapter 36 (The Elevator) was by far the creepiest part of the book. The suspense throughout the whole story was well built, cascaded well into the climax. I will admit there are parts of the movie that I like better than the book, but there's definitely better character development in the written work. Overall, I think the book would have shot my socks farther across the room if I hadn't seen the movie a million times beforehand. Book and movie are equal, for different reasons. Now bring on Doctor Sleep!

As far as atmosphere goes, one can't do much better than this book. The creepiness of it alone makes it worth reading.
