For my English class, we're supposed to pick a book and write a literary analysis on it. I chose The Stand (mainly because I was starting it soon anyway) and I plan on pursuing the topic of good vs. evil.

...I'm supposed to have this read in eight days. I'm only on page 60 right now, and I have the uncut edition. I'm wondering if I should just pick a different book or try and go for it.

So, how long did it take everyone to read The Stand? I love King; he's my favorite author, but I'm not sure if I can read that much in a little over one week.

...it's doable...and the theme of "The White" VS Evil is epic...just like the read...

It is possible to read it in 8 days. And, as GNTLGNT stated the theme of The white Vs Evil is epic. I believe the audio version runs about 48 hours read time. Allow yourself, if possible, blocks of reading time. Try not to sacrifice speed for getting the full content. Good luck and please tell us how you do on the analysis assignment.

Go for it, it's worth the time you'll spend.

A good friend of mine just read it in 6 days. Not because he's a fast reader, but because he thought it was just that good.

I think I read it in a little over two weeks the first time.

I've read the cut version of Stand and okay I admit I'm a lazy reader sometimes. So I think it took 3 or 4 weeks for me to read it.

Once you really get into it, you will find yourself moving along at a quick pace. Are you allowed 8 days to read and report on it? If just 8 days to read, I would take pages in book divide by days and keep yourself to that goal for each day. You can do it!

Yeah, 8 days to read it and then until April to write the analysis (We have to hand in five reader response journals in seven days, however). I think I'm going to go for it! Thanks, guys!

Good luck! You won't regret it. It's a big read and a little daunting if you have a dead line but, like others have said, it's one of those "I can't put...it...DOWN!!!" type of books so I'm sure you'll do fine. And a great book for an analysis. You'll have plenty of material. Good pick!

You can do it! And as others have said, let us know how you do on the assignment. I first read the shorter version and found the Uncut version later at a yard sale. Did the happy dance for weeks later!!:cool2:

I read it in less than a week...it's very absorbing, and you don't want to stop reading.

I read The Stand in two days, but pretty much all I did was read constantly, in between food/water/toilet breaks. :eek2:

Wow! :eek2:

Although I should also state that was long before I discovered the SKMB. Since joining here it's very rare that I can read like that, I'm too damn connected to the internet now. I can still read a "light" 400+ page novel in a day if I have no external distractions.

Only a few short months ago I realized my daughter was using water to fill up her tea-set.
I wondered how she could've accessed the sink since she's still too short to do it on her own...
And then... I realized.... :barf:

It took me a long time, but only because I took a LONG break from it before I got through it all. It's a wonderful book, though. One of my favs.

I had a way different experience than you guys apparently. I read The Stand over the course of a year. I knew that it was and remains Kings best work. I read a few chapters each month while reading other SK stories. This was pretty neat for me b/c I got to spend a long time with them and take a long journey as well. Kind of like it was a tv series where you get weekly episodes.

8 Days!

Either you are a speed-reader, or I have to be the slowest reader of the SK website. It took me 8 days to read TWTTKH. It's taken 2 weeks to read part I of The Stand, so Im guessing it might take 4-6 weeks to finish. Man, a week! I could cover lots of ground if I could read THAT fast!

I'm not a speed reader and you certainly are not the slowest reader of the SK website.:smile2: A lot has to do with how much reading time you have in your life. Students first priority is their studies, so relaxed reading takes second place. Those who have small children often only have time to read at night. I know I can read longer/more in the winter months as opposed the summer when outdoor chores take up most of my time. The main idea is to read at your own pace. Enjoy the book and the experience it brings to you. Length of time to read is not important. Now go enjoy The Stand!

I only wish I had more reading time. By the time I get home from work, settled in, eat dinner, I only have a short time before bed. I don't have kids or attend school, so I do have *some* leisure time. Sometimes I get caught up in silly stuff, like friends and having drinks. If it were up to me, Id just read 24/7. That would literally make me a "constant reader"..

And me as well. And evil aka The Red.... seems to be alive and kicking in The Stand.

I've managed to read the book in a day (well 20-22 hrs) a couple of times when I've been sick and couldn't sleep. In addition to having the time occasionally I'm the type of reader who consumes books I enjoy so I'll just sit in a recliner and read for hours on end. Since its winter, a Minnesotan winter no less, and it also occurs with my downtime its a perfect mix and I managed to get through the Dark Tower books (minus Keyhole) in 8 days. Bless Ka for letting me be born just prior to the explosion in personal computers so I was imbued with a love of reading before these bloody machines took over say thankee.

Something Ive noticed in reading The Stand was that I breezed through Book 1. I am now breezing through Book 3. However, Book 2.... was slow paced, and even boring at times. Books 1 and 3.... page turners!

Start reading it and in a few days you'll realize you're sitting in the same place and haven't put it down. It's that good.
