So all we know at this point is that it's an e-book. I'm assuming it's short story or maybe a novella? Is there any page count on it? Since it's an ebook I guess I'll have to wait until September 1st to find out.

I think the e-book format is great for novellas and short stories. Of course on this board we are alerted when SK is putting a short story in a magazine or anthology. Before I was on this board, I rarely ever read one of SK's stories in a magazine because I didn't know it was there. With the e-book format, the author has a single place to sell the story (Amazon, B&N, etc) making the stories easier to find. These stories will probably make their way into a future collection just like if they were in a magazine. With short stories disappearing from magazines, the e-book format may keep the short story alive.
Ms Mod, any numbers on how UR sales compared to a magazine short story? Of course, with a magazine, you don't know how many sales are because of a short story in it. Maybe the question should be was SK happy with the sales of UR as an e-book?

Perhaps, as did clay tablets and papyrus, but the stories still continue to be written and delivered to people to be read as they have for thousands of years. I understand the sentiment behind not wanting to lose the tactile sense of turning the page of a print book or experiencing that new book (or even old book :smile2:) smell, but it's not the end of literature which would be much more of a loss IMO.

Hi,
But they're not even selling it in 'pages' they're only selling it as a download, which is essentially pageless.
As I said, I think the 'page' as a unit of measurement is in danger of going the same wad asd the Em or En, two units of measurement that have already disappeared in my lifetime.

Funny you should say that, on the news the other night there was a story about some scientists who think with all of the available info on google that humans will start to lose their ability to retain memory. Someone brought up that when paper was invented, the philosophers were very distressed for the same reason, they thought no one would be able to remember anything anymore with everything written down.

Hi,
And indeed, that has proved to be the case. We know far more about the ancient Sumerians (and the Epic of Gilgamesh, for example) which were inscribed on clay tablets, still readable today ('hard' copy?), than we do of much more recent cultures who transcribed on to papyrus or paper, long since rotted away.

And Brian-Metro - I recently wrote a 13,000 word short story, was 24 single spaced pages, 12 pt. font, so figure 15K would be around 30 single spaced pages, however that translates into whatever format it'll be in.

I just finished Mile 81 a few moments ago (I stopped reading The Stand long enough to read it, because the anticipation was killing me). I was thrilled to see a decent 11/22/63 preview at the end, but I've not started it yet. Going back to The Stand first.
I won't spoil anything, but the story was great. There were little moments here and there that kind of irked me, and...
I saw the ending coming from a mile away.
I thought Ur was overall a better story (the comparisons are only inevitable since they're both eBooks), but Mile 81 tapped more into that primal sort of horror that made most of us fall in love with Uncle Steve's work to begin with.
Three bucks will get you a chocolate milshake from McDonald's...or a couple hours alone with a great horror story told by one of the best horror writers. Oh, and if you go for the chocolate milkshake...try not to think about how it looks just a little bit like the mud on that station wagon at the Mile 81 rest area; otherwise you might just decide you don't want it anymore.

Finished Mile 81 last night. Excellent read. A very fast paced story that keeps one attached to the screen. First time I have ever read an ebook via mac computer. ( still prefer the feel of the pages in hand ). Could not believe how quickly time passed. There are many "easter eggs" within this story. Several just hit you like a brick. I think Uncle Steve had fun with this story. A little bit of everything for everyone.

Mile 81 was great. Like UR it was a short read, but still great. Kind of reminded me of The Raft. So far these stories exclusively for the Kindle/Nook are pretty damn good. They should give SK a percentage from every device they sell because of the advertising he's done for them with these 2 stories.

I don't mean to gloat or anything; it isn't nice
But I bought Mile 81 and I have read it - twice.
First time I just gobbled it as quickly as that car.
Second time I savored it. I've 2 complaints. They are:
Just as with most everything that Stephen's ever written
Characters all come to life and I, of course, am smitten
With the people he creates. They almost seem like friends.
Then, too soon (for me at least) the gosh darn story ends.
I don't think it matters though how long the story is.
Never could be long enough - not if the story's his.
Only other gripe I have? It isn't nice to tease.
Next book can't come soon enough. Get here November, please!

Just finished it and loved the story. Some might think it has similarities to earlier works (Buick 8 and Christine) but to me that's a good thing. It's like seeing an old friend when reading a new piece by SK. I'm curious, there was a preview in my Kindle edition of 11/22/63. I decided not to read it because I want to read the whole book new from start to finish. Anyone else feel the same way?

I loved the kids, too. One of my favorite parts was when the mom was thinking to herself that it is never a good idea to give kids sugar on a long car trip. Made me laugh out loud--been there, done that!
I also stopped at the preview for 11/22/63. I am already anxious enough, so decided not to make it worse by reading it, it would only make me more impatient!

Does that mean it's coming out in "book" form? I can't just go out and by an ebook reader. I was a little pissed off that I couldn't read this book without one.

You don't need to buy an e-reader. If you're willing to buy from Amazon, they have a free Kindle reader app (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/redirector.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fg p%2Ffeature.html%2Fref%3Dsa_menu_karl3%3Fie%3DUTF8 %26docId%3D1000493771) you can download to a variety of devices and then order Mile 81 and read it that way.
As for it coming out in print, I don't have any information about if/when that might happen.
P.S. Just realized other ebook retailers may offer a similar app if you are one of those who doesn't like to order from Amazon.

Also there is a free application called Calibre that will read any ebook file. Useful also for converting your personal documents to an e-reader format like epub.

I'm pretty upset that it's only for e-readers. I refuse to buy one of things bc i really enjoy having the actual books. Does anyone know if it will be published in some other format??

Hi, Erin (welcome to the Board!)
I'd rather have a printed book, as well, but-sadly-I don't see e-readers going away any time soon. That seems to be the direction that the publishing industry is going..

I got the B&N version with the added teaser. I enjoyed it immensely. One small thing though, the policeman could not have forgotten to take the safety off on his glock, they don't have safeties. The trigger mechanism serves that purposely being two part and a hard pull like a revolver in double action.

I just bought a little Net-book so I could sit on the couch in my livingroom and be on the Board while I pretend to watch TV with my husband. So, I don't have a Kindle. Or a Nook. Or an I-Pad. Or any other e-reader. So I can't read Mile 81.

Well, I'd say that the odds are pretty good that it -- as well as "UR" -- would be included in King's next story collection. OF course, who knows when that could be ... although at the rate he's producing short stories lately, he's already got enough stockpiled for another collection, I'd guess.
Personally, I was a bit disappointed by "Mile 81." It wasn't awful, but it's one that just didn't really do much for me.

So I did it.......I broke down and ordered this from Kindle and read it on my computer. I just couldn't wait. I really enjoyed this story! The only thing wrong with it is that it ended too soon. I wanted more!!!!

I really enjoyed Mile 81, but, like many others here, I felt it ended too soon. Now, I realize that, apparently, I missed "Ur" completely, so I'm off to B&N to download that one!
Thanks to SK for another superb short story.

Does anyone know if this story will become available on "paper." I don't have the cash to purchase an e-reader for this one book. Personally I am a little ticked that I won't be able to read it. I haven't missed a book in so long that I can't remember and rereading is a good thing but new stories always make me happy. If anyone has any info on this please let me know.

There won't be another story collection coming out anytime soon but you don't have to have an e-reader to get the story. There are free software applications you can download that will allow you to read an e-book/story on your computer, e.g. Kindle's can be found here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=sa_menu_karl3?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771). You will still have to purchase the story as an e-book but you can read it on your computer.

Mile 81 is great story. I bought my Nook Color specifically right around the time it was released. Damn well worth it. This is my first delve into the e-reader market and I wanted to make sure one of Mr. King's books was the first one to touch my new e-reader. I was not disappointed. Seemed like five minutes into it, I was finishing it. ME WANT MORE Mile 81! Great story.

Read Mile 81 over the weekend. It was my first ebook. Very fitting.
SK managed to ellicit a visceral reaction to include tears (again). "Thirty!"

call me old fashioned but I like to hold the actual book when I read. I do not own an eBook or Kindle or anything like that. Does anyone know if Mile 81 is going to be put in paper back or hard cover?
Thanks! ~ Susan

Thanks! ~ SusanYou asked for it, Jor80Dan: You're old-fashioned. I'm both old- and new-fashioned, since music CDs, anyway. I told myself I bought the cassettes! I won't start over!
I don't even know where those cassettes are anymore, and I have hundreds of CDs, and I'm happy. I keep my vinyl, though.
If/when the time comes I read a beloved eBook, I rest assured of its hardcopy. Somewhere.

Blunt - have you converted your 8 tracks to mp-3s yet? :biggrin2:
Trivia question - What was the last commercially released 8-track (at least in the US)?
1982, Bob Seger - The Distance Bob insisted that Capital Records release it on 8-track because he thought many of his fans still had 8 track players:biggrin2:
Sorry, now that I've totally gone off the rails of the tread, let me just say to Jor80Dan; "buy a kindle, you'll love it and you don't have to read anything on it you don't want to."

My question is (and I haven't read the other posts so as not to ruin the tale) is the novella worth the download? I don't have any of this fancy machinery but I did just get an Android phone and the tale is offered to download onto the phone. While I don't think I'll enjoy reading something in such small text if it is a superb tale I might not mind. It is only $2.99 so I obviously don't mind the cost. Still just a little weirded out with my new phone. Not used to anything on it as of yet!

I just have a plain old PC, no special gadgets. You can get a free app to download a Kindle on your PC or Mac. Text will be larger than the phone.
Mile 81 is an excellent story. Quick read and keeps you looking for the next "happening". Enjoy.

You speak true! I think Mrs. Todd's Mercedes (from the story Mrs. Todd's Shortcut) went to the same place a few times while she was looking for that elusive short cut, too.

Just read this one today. Really liked it a lot. I was intrigued by the car, where did it come from, what was it? I'll admit it was not anything like I was thinking it was going to be, from the description, I dunno, I was imagining teenagers hanging out at the rest stop and a serial killer come in or something. But it was an awesome surprise. I was creeped out for the most of it, and then when the ending came, I was like  because of the way it was finished, the kid and everything. But it was great. I was fully invested in every character that was introduced... I get blown away every time by SK's way of getting me into the characters, fleshing 'em out so well.
