Dennis Quaid. Google his name under google images. He's the right age and build, and if you've ever sen the movei Wyatt Earp, he can play a cowboy type.

I can't see Dennis Quid as Roland, sorry. I think there's a similar thread for this somewhere. My vote goes to Viggo Mortensen, number one. I'd prefer Clint Eastwood, of course, but he's too old now. Maybe Clint as Cort, calling them maggots?

How 'bout this:
Roland--younger Clint Eastwood
Eddie--James Dean
Suze--Billy Holiday
Jake--gosh, you know, I really dont give a damn who plays Jake
Walter--Richard Widmark
Jonas--Lee Marvin
Cort--John Wayne (with a shaven head...wouldn't that be a riot?)
Balazarr--Edward G Robinson
Steve Deschain--Humphrey Bogart
you see where I'm going with this? Have the whole thing directed by Sergio Leonne, or John Huston, with a Morricone soundtrack and were in buisness.

Just watched a movie I never heard of before on Netflix a few weeks ago called Centurion and kept thinking throughout the film that the lead actor (Michael Fassbender) would make a good Roland. It was actually a pretty good movie too.

You know what, I don't care if he is 180, get Eastwood in there. Too bad Lee Van Cleef is dead or he could be Eldren Jonas. Man, if this movie could have been made in the 60s, that would have been the ultimate cast.

I am going with...Aaron Rodgers! Packer fans unite! He's got the steely determination, the gunslinging attitude and that disgusted look he gets when he screws up would work perfectly for Eddie's silliness which drives Roland nuts.

Hi,
It's some job for a young actor to pay Roland as Will Dearborn, don't you think?
That's a part that could make or break a career IMO.

Roland.. i've got 2 suggestions:
1: Gregory House (yes from that tv show)
2: my more serious suggestion is Tchéky Karyo, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tch%C3%A9ky_Karyo
It's gonna be such a daunting task to cast and properly portay this character, part of me wishes this movie will never get made. Goodluck!!

I'm happy with Bardem (now) if we actually get him. If not we could go for Jeffrey Dean Morgan aka The Comedian from The Watchmen. They even look similar he's like a poor man's Bardem. Just kidding he's a great actor I've seen him in lots of films :smile2:

i dont understand why anytime i suggest stephen moyer as roland to my friends they shoot me down. he's dark haired, haggard and gaunt looking but at the same time youthful, slim build, and he's a fine british actor, with quiet, brooding acting sensibilities. ironicaly enough, i think his performance in true blood isnt a good example of how good an actor he is. sometimes the 'vamp' acting can be a bit cheesy maybe.
oh, and arron paul(from breaking bad) as eddie, also a fine actor. i can really see both of 'em in those roles.
and michael massee as the man in black,
and daniel day lewis as oy, He's that good an actor!!!:-) jus kidding!!!

They have always had to do that for a lot of actors. For Alan Ladd they would dig a trench for the other actors to stand or walk in when they were in a shot or scene with him. I was watching an Oscars pre-show years back. The interviewer was talking to Tim Robbins and saw Clint Eastwood nearby and asked him to join them. Tim Robbins quick had to get up on a box when Eastwood came over! I do not mean to make fun, it is just that movie success depends largely on audience perception of what is acceptable.

Did you really mean Tim Robbins? He's tall--I've seen him in person here in Bangor. Just checked and he's reportedly 6'4" and I'd say that was accurate. Clint Eastwood had been 6'4" in his younger days but is now reported at 6'2".

I've never read the Dark Tower series. My brother has. He thinks they're great, so I've added them to my things to read list. Based on the suggestions other people are making, I think Josh Brolin might be a good pick. He did a good job as the villain in True Grit. He's about in his late 30s or early 40s, I think. Dennis Quaid, on the other hand, is about 50. Is Roland that old? If so, Harrison Ford would be too old. What about George Clooney? He's not a great actor, but he did an excellent job in Michael Clayton. Maybe he would be able to connect with the character of Roland equally well.

I hope nobody here will tell you how old Roland is, that's something for you to ponder when you experience his quest.
As for Clooney? Nope! I love his handsome face but the character of Roland needs a GREAT actor to portray him. That's what he (we) deserve.

I think Hugh Laurie would fit perfectly with those piercing blue eyes of his, and he always has that scruffiness look about him. He does great with masking an accent as well if needed. I dont really think an accent is really going to be a problem for anyone. A role like this would really give Hugh Laurie the chance to show off how good of an actor he really is, only problem would probably be everyone waiting for him to say something witty and smart ass like, like he does in House but hey that should be ok right? I also think Josh Brolin would be really good for this role, he always seems to have that western, gunslinger quality about him. just some thoughts.....just sucks we gotta wait a couple of years to actually see this:sad:

I think that all of you who think that Javier is too soft and not scary should really rethink your position. This guy is perfect for Roland. He has proven that he can be scary and mysterious. With a cowboy hat, he'd be perfect for Roland. If you look at the pic of Clint at the bottom, imagine Javier with the same get-up. He would fit right in.

Had to weigh in... British fellow from House is faaaaaarrrrr to soft to play Roland. I could never see Laurie gunning down the possessed inhabitants of Tull. Actually, I could never see him wielding a six shooter outside of a pathetic, attention drawing attempt at false suicide. Bring on Christian Bale, and failing that draw, Viggo. Remember: Roland is killing machine, not an cranky old codger. Also, Bale and Viggo both have the acting chops to pull this one off.

While reading the books, I imagined the characters- - - - -javiar, Brolin- - -both good actors, but Viggo has proven his ability to vascilate between the very quiet desperation of his "The Road" character, and the kingly voice of Aragorn with great dramatic effect. To me, he IS Roland- - - -and Shia LeBeouff is most definitely Eddie. Susannah: Zoe Salandar, as she has immense physical prowess as the Susannah character must have. Jake- - - -somebody new with some "grit" for his age- - -can't be too much of a pretty boy. Pere Callahan would have been played very well by Richard Harris, if he were still with us. Gotta be Viggo to get the desperation and exhaustion over.

Honestly, I think Javier could really pull off Roland Deschain. I mean, just take a look at him in his recent film "Buitiful", look at how long his hair is and how intense he seems in his still shots, the man is tall and is in shape, and to me he marks the key features that would be needed to hold fans into a man who has a long, unsettling past of horrors, murder, and trials beyond compare...Hopefully, Javier Bardem will take the part of Roland, and also these movies had better be rated R because the books were not written to be, in my opinon, a damn PG-13 movie script-post.

Im with jebus5000. Karl Urban would be the best bet. Watch the new movie Priest with him in and as soon as you see him tell me he wouldnt make a perfect Roland Deschain. If not him then Gerard Butler only if he can slim down and lose all the muscle. But thats just my opinion. Also in the movie Priest Karl Urban does resemble a young Clint Eastwood.

while yes I am new here I have been reading and loving this series for years. I have heard a lot of great suggestions for the role of Roland as just wanted to throw out mine and see what people think. So how about Hugh Laurie I think he fits the physical demands and the intensity the role would require.

There is a new show on NBC on Thursday night at 10:00 called Awake. A policeman is living (dreaming) in 2 realities, in one, his wife lived through the accident, in the other reality, his son lived through the accident. I do not know this actor, don't remember ever seeing him before, but as soon as I started watching all i could think of was 'he is Roland'. Put a weather beaten hat and jeans on him and give him the gun... that man is Roland. Check it out...

Just watched a movie I never heard of before on Netflix a few weeks ago called Centurion and kept thinking throughout the film that the lead actor (Michael Fassbender) would make a good Roland. It was actually a pretty good movie too.

Clint Eastwood y'all. He was Stephen's inspiration for Roland in the first place, when he took Stephen's breath away seeing him on the big screen. If Roland were known as bald, shorter and uglier - yeah!
Seriously, Roland is a far deeper character than any (maybe the only) character Stratham has ever portrayed. The generic action movie star won't work here.
Clint Eastwood would be my first choice, since he is semi-retired on acting, or at least retired from roles such as of a gunslinger, I would pick Toby Stephens. Stephens has the right age, right looks (portrayed a younger version of Eastwood's character in Space Cowboys) and good acting skills.

I just saw hugh jackman in an interview showing how versitile (sp) he is as an actor/performer. I must take back anything I may have saidin protest about him and russell crowe as well. both have proven themselves & would be great in theire rolls. whatever character they might choose. there are so many actors that could be terrific in these king movies. its just exciting to think of it.

Holy wow.... there have been a few reasonable options so far, but I have to say some of these opinions are worthy of a bullet....lol Shia Labeof as Eddie? REALLY!?!? Johnny Depp as a YOUNG Roland in Megis? OMFG.... he is almost as old as Clint at this point and Roland was supposed to be 15 at that point. Javier Bardem does have a certain chisle to him, but you guys are missing one important fact there.... ROLAND IS WHITE. Not just white, but PALE AS HELL. He is supposed to be tall, lanky, borderline sickly looking. Here are some reasonable options.
Roland- pref. an unknown, but if had to be known .... Daniel Craig, Josh Brolin, Anson Mount,Thomas Jane,Sean Bean,Jim Cavezil
Will Deerborn - Tom Welling or as much as I hate to say this... Zach Efron... those eyes.....
Eddie - Joeseph Levitt, Jared Leto, Jake Gyllenhall, Luke Evans, orlando bloom
Susannah - only one I'm at a loss for... Halle and Jada are too old...lol Rosario Dawson? Nevia from Spartacus maybe?
Jake - Dakota Goyo (real steel) ,
Cort - easiest casting EVER..... RON PEARLMAN.... MAGGOT
Cuthbert - any choice for Eddie that isn't used.... kinda 2 sides of the same coin.
Alain - Tom Felton
Jonas- Gary Oldman, or perhaps..... Clint?
Walter- Fisher Stevens...best evil smile in hollywood...and laugh. Julian McMahon, Robert Knepper
Stephen Deschain - now HE could be Dennis Quaid.....
Gabrielle Deschain - Lucy Lawless makes a great trecherous bitch.
Rea of the Coos - would have to be CG... only old lady that you could maybe get to say c*nt is Betty White.
Father Callahan - Robert Duvall, James Caan
Balazar- Jon Polito
Jack Andolini - James Gandolfini
yeah.... may have given this a bit of thought a time or two.... *whistles*

Well since no one else has mentioned it, I thought it should be noted that David Carradine is dead. I believe that would leave him out of consideration for the role of Roland. His brother Robert was the guy in Revenge of the Nerds. His other brother Keith played Wild Bill Hickock on Deadwood, among many other roles. All three were in The Long Riders. Good movie about the James/Younger gang.

Warner backed out but I'm not sure what the status is for HBO. If they've decided to pass, I missed it. Bardem was the first one slated to play Roland but has been replaced for consideration by Russell Crowe. The news stories about the movie are probably buried in the archives as there has been a lot of news since the last update back around August which is that the movie may be produced in association with Media Rights Capital (the company that produced Ted).

So far nobody I've seen in Hollywood matches the Roland I see in my head when I read the books. Viggo Mortensen projects that aura of melancholy that I associate with Roland's personality but he doesn't physically look like the Roland I imagine. I think they should find some new up and comer to play Roland, someone who can play the role without the baggage of fame and numerous other roles.

Anson Mount is fantastic in Hell on Wheels, and he would make a great Roland. Doubt anyone who is on the casting team has even considered him though as he is fairly unknown at this point and I'm sure they'll go for big stars even though they should go with unknowns.
Besides Anson Mount I would choose one of the favorites, like Viggo Mortennson or Hugh Jackman.
Eddie Dean though has got to be Aaron Paul or it is a fail.
