Anyone else familiar with McCammon? fans of IT could do a lot worse than his novel Boy's Life, which I read last summer. For a great evocation of childhood in small town America (plus thriller/horror), I've not read better since I read IT back in 1989.
Here's a synopsis (contains spoilers):

You might have to copy and paste to go directly to the link, otherwise you will probably get the Wiki disambiguation.

I read Boys Life when it came out. It was great. Around the same time I read Summer of Night by Dan Simmons, which could be a twin.

I've got Swan Song on my Amazon wish list as it's meant to be in a similar vein to The Stand. One of the best horror novels I've read is Graham Masterton's Walkers - superb book.

His last couple of novels have been historical mysteries -- he has another one coming out later on this year. They're great books, definitely worth checking out.

I just finished Boy's Life a couple of days ago, and now I put it in my top ten (nonSK) books. I already miss the characters.
But on the same day I finished it, I ordered two more of his books, so they're on the way!

Robert McCammon is one of the best wordslingers out there IMO.
He's got a new book coming out in Oct. "Mister Slaughter," it's the third installment of the Matthew Corbett series.
The others are "Speaks the Nightbird," and "The Queen of Bedlam," really killer stuff!
LOL John D, you got it right.
Now where's the Goathunter?

I'm here, Patricia! :)
It's looking like Mister Slaughter is more likely to appear in December or in January 2010. But it's definitely coming.
I recently created a new website to help promote the Matthew Corbett series by McCammon: Matthew Corbett's World (http://www.matthewcorbettsworld.com/)

OMG. A resounding YES! Check out MINE and The Wolf's Hour. I'm surprised you didn't like Swan Song though. What about it didn't you care for?
Usher's Passing is another great one. I'm a fan of his new Matthew Corbett series,as well., can't wait for Mister Slaughter! McCammon is right up there with King imo, but sai King is my 1st love, so...he gets top billing on my bookcase. Behind glass even. :wink2:

To be honest, I don't remember. I read it years ago while in college and just found it ... ordinary, I suppose. Just kind of ho-hum, nothing to write home about. And today nothing of the story has stuck with me beyond the girl's name (Sue Wanda, because I thought it was an awful name). Maybe I didn't read it at the right time or had too high of expectations but it did not impress itself on me at all. A Boy's Life I found a bit better but all too reminiscent of Mr. King's work ... I found the similarities blatant and near disgusting. It left a sour taste in my mouth I was never able to shake.

Although McCammon and King both write that's where the similarities end IMO, other than the fact that they are both gifted.
Some people say that McCammon is a spin-off of King, I beg to differ. To say that is to say, all writers after Stephen King are spin-offs.
That's just not cricket.
So far as creative integrity goes, there is nothing you can say that hasn't been said before, try it LOL, see. :)

There was a hardcover release of Blue World by Grafton in the UK back in 1989. There weren't a lot printed then (a couple of thousand), and the book is usually fairly pricey now.
Here's an Advanced Book Exchange link to search for them. They start at $40+: ABE search for Blue World (http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=Robert+McCammon&bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&isbn=0246134550&kn=grafton&sortby=2&sts=t&tn=blue+world&x=59&y=9)

Maybe re-reads would clarify for you?
They well might. I could easily have been overly judgemental, cynical, jaded, etc. It was college, and I am prone to a "love em or hate em" mentality when it comes to authors. Thus far, once my gavel has fallen against an author, he or she has been cordoned off for good. But maybe it's time for an appeal.

Approximately 1400 people read Boy's Life over the summer as part of the community reading project, and in August, Mr. McCammon visited the high school and spoke to parents, alumni, and students.

Robert McCammon has been one of my favorite authors ever since I read STINGER back in 1989. Back when McCammon was writing Horror Fiction, he wrote several great novels, all of which I've read. To date, The Wolve's Hour, The Night Boat, Bethany's Sin, Swan Song, and They Thirst are among my favorite. Blue World featured some of McCammon's best short stories - my favorite being Night Calls the Green Falcon. You can visit McCammon's website for more information. I actually got the chance to meet McCammon during a book signing for his book, Mine, back in the early 90's. Rick is a true Southern gentleman and a mighty fine writer.

McCammon ...he has several books that I have read ,which I highly recommend, -Here is a short list- "Mine","Gone South","A Boy's Life", naturally "Swan Song"-his Stand,"Wolf's hour", "The U-Boat", "Baal","They Thirst",-I have to read something when Sai King is not circulating anything new. Also in another vein try Clive Barker's "The Great and Secret Show, and its sequel "Everworld". I particularly like Barker's "Weaveworld, and Imagica".
For some time travel and weird kink try Nicholson Baker's "The Fermata". I just read Dan Simmons ' "Drood "-a great big tome of speculative fiction, history, and Charles Dickens" "double life"- long and satisfying. Read his Stoker Award Winning -"Carrion Comfort,if you have not it will blow your mind....... control- no spoilers. E. Freemantle,AKA Beambounder. Also all the "Demon in The Freezer" by Richard Prestion, author of another terrifying tome... "The Hot Zone". Try Ursula Le Guins' "The Lathe of Heaven. Short ,but formidable. Also read anything by H.P. Lovecraft. and Daniel Easterman, Historial University of Belfast- Highest Recommendation "The Night of The Seventh Darkness. Enough for now. Long Days and pleasant Nights. -R.S.Sippel

Because I write book reviews for the local newspaper's blog, I got an advance reading copy of Mister Slaughter, and it was truly excellent. I know Mr. McCammon hated it, but back during the eighties when I reviewed a number of his books for Fantasy Mongers magazine, I used to call him the next Stephen King, and I meant that in sincere admiration. At that time, no other writer could come close to King's craftsmanship and storytelling ability, except for Robert McCammon. I've enjoyed all of his novels over the last three decades, and I'm happy as a clam that he's writing again. He's written three Matthew Corbett novels, with Mister Slaughter due out in January. He has a stand-alone novel due out at the end of 2010, which may be his first horror novel in twenty years. Hunter Goatley can confirm whether the next book will actually be horror or not. Last, Mr. McCammon's book, Boy's Life, is certainly in my top ten list of favorite novels to read. This book is in many ways a literary classic.

So what do you think of Swan Song so far?
People are always comparing it to The Stand, I don't understand that.
The only real thing the two stories have in common is that they are both apocalyptic type stories, but they go in completely different directions and have a different voice. So whatever, I don't get it.
Well they do have another thing in common, they are both great reads.
I don't recommend reading them back to back as you may wind up wanting to dig a fallout shelter in your back yard. If you already have one then, hey, that might work.

I'm about a quarter of way through with it so far. Its been almost 20 years since I read The Stand, so I can't do a great comparison so far other than as you suggested, the fact both deal with end of the world scenarios. So far I really like it...very good character development. If someone gave me the book without revealing the i.d. of the author, frankly I would think I'm reading King.

I've read nearly everything he has written, Its taken me 15 years to find all of them because most are out of print. Some of the Best that he has written are - The Wolfs Hour, Usher's Passing, Swan Song, Stinger (This is the first one I read and had to find all the rest), Gone South, Bethany's Sin, Blue World (in and out of Hollywood limbo, Blue World itself none of the others from the book) Baal, and They Thirst (with a little update I think this one would do really well on the market again. I talked to Goatley about a month ago and there is someone talking to McCammon about making some of his out of print works into audio books.

Boy's Life would be a WONDERFUL movie and probably wind up winning an Academy Award... providing it was done right. (Peter Jackson are you busy?)
Has any of R. McCammon's work been made into movies? I'm not aware of any.

Has any of R. McCammon's work been made into movies? I'm not aware of any.
No movies, but there have been two episodes of two TV shows based on McCammon's work. "Nightcrawlers" was adapted for the 1980s version of The Twilight Zone. It was directed by William Friedkin and is widely regarded as the best episode of that series. "Makeup" was a laughable production for the 1980s show Darkroom that starred Billy Crystal (!) and Brian Dennehy.

Thanks for the info. I just searched Hulu for the episodes and I couldn't find either of them so I guess it's off to Amazon. They had better not have messed up "Makeup" that was a super great story. A modern classic IMO.

The TZ episode of "Nightcrawlers" is available on DVD in the Season 1 TZ set. None of the Darkroom episodes has been officially released. And in the case of "Makeup," that's just as well, as it is pretty horrendous.

I started reading Boy's Life after seeing this thread (I really wanted to read Swan Song, but my library doesn't have that one) and have to say he's a fine writer. I'm only 60 pages or so in, but that's some crisp prose. My favorite part so far is the talk of Grandpa Jaybird and his sense of wonder in nature being confused for lunacy. Really great stuff. I think I identify with this book more because of the southern setting (as opposed to king's it -- though familiar, it's not like looking out in the backyard). Anyway, if the book keeps the current momentum, it should be an excellent read.
Thanks for introducing me to this author.

Robert R. McCammon is genius. I read most of his stuff. I highly recommend Baal, They Thirst, Stinger, Swan Song, Mark of the Beast, Mine, A boy's life, U Boat, and I think it is called Wolf's Lair, Bethany's Sin, Blue World, and The Mr Slaughter Series. His work reads well ,is well researched and there is well described horror, and attention to character development. Also look into the work of Daniel Easterman's supernatural mysteries like Night of the Seventh Darkness. yours E.Freemantle

From Subterranean Press (http://subterraneanpress.com/index.php/2010/04/21/robert-mccammon-major-the-wolfs-hour-news/):
Robert McCammon has just turned in a brand-new 36,000 word novella, “The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs” about a further WWII adventure of Michael Gallatin that will be included in The Wolf’s Hour, pushing the book to just shy of 700 pages. We expect the inclusion of this major piece of new fiction will drive sales of this limited edition, making it a must have for every serious McCammon fan.
To accommodate the expected demand for The Wolf’s Hour — this novella was a last minute addition, long after the book was announced — with Mr. McCammon’s permission we’ve decided to increase the print run to 750 copies, to cover the increased printing costs, to compensate the author for a significant new piece of fiction, and to give his many fans a chance at this important collectible edition.
McCammon talks about this and more in today's update on RobertMcCammon.com (http://www.robertmccammon.com/).

Just off the phone with Robert McCammon's agent with most welcome news. In early 2011, we'll be releasing The Five, one of Robert McCammon's most ambitious novels to date, a mammoth 180,000 word epic thriller with a very dark fantastic backbeat. More news on the limited and trade editions soon.

Just finished Swan Song after reading this thread and I'm hooked. To me one of the biggest similarities to the Stand was Flagg/Friend, but it certainly didn't spoil the novel for me. The Job's Mask disease just blew me away, one of the coolest fantasy concepts ever.
And I loved how dark it was!!
What should I get next?

Anyway, are there any of his other books more in line with Boy's Life?

So the other day I got to work and Lo and Behold there is a hardback copy of Swan Song in my bin! I grabbed it and stated whooping like a kid who finally got a b-b gun for Christmas! Sounds like another publisher failing to understand the huge changes in book-selling that the Kindle (et al) usher in.
When you think about it, publishers are simply pointless parasites between the author's creativity and the end user in the third millenium.

I agree, same as the relationship between record companies and recording artists. Prince sold millions of copies of Purple Rain. I believe that the average payout for a recording artist is 10 cents on the dollar, and that's if they're a BIG artist! What do record companies do for the artist?

Anyone remember TLC? (the female singing group?) They had the biggest selling record of the year (the one that had Waterfalls on it) and they had to declare bankruptcy that year. Why? Because they (TLC) had to pay for the production costs of all of their videos, etc. while the record exec's ran all the way to the bank laughing with fistfulls of dollars. And, there was no KY jelly available either........... The only way recording artists make any money is to go on tour and sell other merchandise like t-shirts, programs etc. Such a sad state of business in my opinion.

He would have been as popular as King or Koontz if his publisher at the time hadn't of balked at the idea of publishing what I believe are the three historical thrillers (Speaks The Nightbird, Queen Of Bedlam & Mister Slaughter) that he's done in the last couple of years (and each were bestsellers for him, so take that stupid publishers!!). He had done so much research (obviously) and spent so much time on these stories. That sent him into a depression. I think he and his wife had just had a baby before all of this took place so he also probably wanted to take a break from writing and be a Dad. When you're in the 'entertainment' industry you can't just take time out of the limelight and expect to be as popular as you once were i.e. Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, etc. Hunter, I might be wrong on some of this, maybe you could clarify things? I'm hoping that if 'Mine' ever gets made into a movie and becomes a hit then he will again reach the status that he once had. He deserves to be a more popular writer! He is a true Southern Gentleman, in all aspects. (and a damn good story teller too!)

I have read The Village a couple of times. It's a great novel, but given the publishing world of today, I'm not surprised that publishers were scared by it. There are no plans to publish The Village yet, but I'm fairly confident that it will someday be published.

As far as I can remember, I haven't read any of his books yet. But among the books I inherited recently are ten by Robert R. McCammon. I've got The Night Boat, Swan Song, Mystery Walk, Stinger, Bethany's Sin, Baal, Usher's Passing, Boy's Life, The Wolf's Hour, and Mine. So, which one should I read first?

Hi,
Wow, you've got a treasure trove there, I haven't actually read all of them but those that I have I've loved.
And for me it would have to be Swan Song.
Enjoy your reading!

Subterranean Press: Early Word on Robert McCammon's THE FIVE from STEPHEN KING and PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (http://subterraneanpress.com/index.php/2011/03/14/early-word-on-robert-mccammons-the-five-from-stephen-king-and-publishers-weekly/)
You can click on the link above to read it all, but I thought this was worth posting here:
The first, an unsolicited note from Stephen King:
“The Five isn’t just Robert McCammon’s best novel in years; it’s his best novel ever. Terrifying, suspenseful, unputdownable, and full of rock and roll energy. It’s also uplifting, a book you’ll finish feeling better about your world, your friends, and your music. Here’s one you’ll beg friends to read.”

Robert McCammon's new thriller, The Five, the one called "his best novel ever" by Stephen King, and "infused with power and passion, and laced with psychological horror and razor-sharp tension" in a Starred Review in Publishers Weekly, is headed into its second printing, less than a week after it started shipping.

Actually, I'm going to read Stinger next. Its the first Mccammon book I've read. I like the Texas setting, and the summary sounds interesting.
There is such a lack of interesting stories in the horror genre today, I have to go way back in the vault to find something.

Sorry, I haven't checked in for a while. The Five will be released as an ebook for Kindle, Nook, and others, but not for another couple of months or so (I don't have an exact timeframe for it). The following titles are the only ones legally available as ebooks at this time: Swan Song, The Queen of Bedlam, and Mister Slaughter. We'd love to see more ebooks, and there will be more in the future, but Pocket Books owns the rights to many of them, including Boy's Life and Speaks the Nightbird, and for whatever reason, they've chosen not to release those as ebooks yet.
As for audiobooks, we also hope to see some of those in the not-too-distant future. As soon as I have any news on either format, I'll post it here.

No, there are no plans at this time for another edition of The Wolf's Hour. The original contract was for the limited edition(s) alone.
Note that the novella included in the limited edition of The Wolf's Hour was "The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs," which is the free ebook mentioned above.

I just re-read Blue World, which had been my favorite McCammon ... and I wasn't very impressed. I liked it quite a bit several years ago, but it just doesn't do much for me now. It wasn't bad, but like so many of his stories, they never seemed to really find their legs and take off running. I keep waiting to be hooked, wowed, or at least genuinely entertained ... but the more I read of him the less interest I have in continued reading. I might give The Five a try but, honestly, if that doesn't do it I'll probably never pick up another. Some authors and readers just don't mix.

On a recent visit to my friendly neighbourhood used bookstore, this thread kept surfacing in my thoughts as I was browsing the dusty paperbacks. I was able to find a copy of They Thirst, which the vampire nut in me was drawn to, but alas, I was unable to find copies of Boy's Life or Swan Song. I did, however, find a copy of one not mentioned on this thread that sounded interesting: Usher's Passing. Anyone have anything to say about that one? I'm just finishing up Firestarter right now (for some reason, I'm getting a very Bachman feeling from it), but after that, I'll be moving on They Thirst.

Hi! Usher's Passing is a good book, McCammon did a fine job continuing the legend of the House of Usher. It's not his finest, but it is a good read, I'd recommend it, but not as a 'first' McCammon read. You are going to really enjoy They Thirst!!!!

5 stars being the highest, 1 being his absolute worst.
And what do you consider to be his best?

Just a note here, my uncle published a few books over the past 30 yrs or so but I never saw or read them. I was told they were very adult in nature and never made it to any top list of any list I was aware of but his name was Robert Acklin. It might be possible to google one or two I suppose. I say this in case anyone is interested. He also used to paint nude women (dont want to shock anyones sensibilities so if you google & actually find them, I want you to be prepared! I'm not cause I walked in & saw one of his paintings once when I was about 16. It was a shock, but the lady was beautiful as well as endowed! lol. He always painted redheads...nevermind.
anyway he passed away so I thought I'd mention him & his impressive talents. He was a private man & was paranoid about computers & his privacy so I dont know if you can find anything. He lived in various states as the govt. sent him. Last work place was Los AlamosNM, residence split there & AZ. hope that helps.

Lots going on in the world of McCammon. Since I last posted about the Swan Song audiobook, The Five has also been released as an unabridged audiobook, and Baal is now available as an ebook. In addition, Subterranean Press posted an update about All Things McCammon, talking about what's just shipped and what's coming.....

Swan Song is incredible, probably the best post-apocalyptic book I've ever read, and I definitely don't give away that title lightly. There is something about the way it is written, truly a wonderful read.

Swan Song is a great read. One of the best if not the best post-apocalyptic nuclear holocaust books ever. The characters are very solid in the book. I've read all of McCammon's books, but imho Swan Song is his best.

I prefer his pure horror stuff to the period pieces, but heck he's great whatever he chooses to write.
I gave Mine to my wife and daughter to read, they were really feeling it in a primordial way.

I read Swan Song after seeing a list of books that would make good movies. And I heard how it is similar to The Stand, which is my favorite book. So I checked it out. It is a good book. I see similarities, but they are different. But I don't agree that Swan Song would make a good movie. It's a good read and there are a few scenes that would be good in a movie. The movie theater scene with Faces of Death it a great set up scene. And the scene in the department store (was it a K-mart?) is a great scene. But being stuck in the convenient store cellar and a few other scenes wouldn't work in a movie. I also think the story would drag as a movie. The second act covers too much time. So it would be tough to pull off.
I also read The Five because I read about it on one of Mr. King's Entertainment Weekly articles. Very good read. Great book if you love rock music.
I'll check out more of his stuff, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Just read Baal for the first time. It's got problems (it's a little too episodic and unfocused, the prose is weak in places, and ultimately it's too short), but overall, I enjoyed it.

I'm about halfway through McCammon's latest in the Matthew Corbett series, "The Providence Rider," and am enjoying it immensely! This series is one of my favorites. I keep picturing Matthew as Johnny Depp looked in "Sleepy Hollow." That, along with McCammon's writing, makes it doubly fun!

Anyone else familiar with McCammon? fans of IT could do a lot worse than his novel Boy's Life, which I read last summer. For a great evocation of childhood in small town America (plus thriller/horror), I've not read better since I read IT back in 1989.
Here's a synopsis (contains spoilers):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy's_Life_(novel)
You might have to copy and paste to go directly to the link, otherwise you will probably get the Wiki disambiguation. I would like to read some of his work, but the book store that generally use only has one of his titles; Swan Song. I want to read! :biggrin2:
